Hi Gordon,

By pure coincidence the following article appeared in the Dundee Courier
today. (Friday)

---------------------paste----------------------------------------
My Item, about the House of Sandeman and Glasites interested a Dundee
reader. He writes, “My best friend at school in Edinburgh over 50 years
ago was a Waterston (now sadly deceased) whose family were inter-linked
with the Sandeman’s in some way, and they were all Glasites originally,
attending a church in the Broughton Street area of the capital.

“The Glasites were founded in 1730 by John Glas, the minister of Tealing,
who was deposed from the Church of Scotland for holding independent
views. The church was always fairly small but had branches in Scotland,
England and America. The first minister after Glas was Robert Sandeman
(Perth 1736). Scripture readings each Sunday were arranged in such a way
that the whole Bible was read annually. Singing was mostly from the Psalms.”

“In the interval between morning and afternoon services an Agape Feast
(Love Feast) took place, often with the washing of feet.”

“Glasites seldom, if ever, co-operated in any way with other churches. I don’t
know if’ any churches still exist, but some of the Waterston family left and,
rejoined the Church of Scotland. It is of interest that the. Waterstons-who
has had a stationer’s shop in Edinburgh down the years printed all Scottish
bank notes in a works near the new Parliament building. Another product of
the works when I was young was sealing wax.”

PS. How is the Ruxton's coming along?

Subject: [ANGUS] GLASITE CHURCH

Hello Everyone
I've been lurking in the background for some time now but I have recently
noticed a message regarding the GLASITE CHURCH and would like to pursue this
line of enquiry further. I have noticed that the DUNDEE UNIVERSITY ARCHIVES
has a collection (Br MS9) of Glasite Church Correspondence 1790-1896. Has
anyone ever had access to these materials? Can anyone tell me if there are
any marriage or baptismal records for members of the Glasite Church?

I am particulary interested in searching for records of a marriage between
ROBERT SANDS 1764-1814 and a daughter of a prominent member of the Glasite
movement c 1796 as well as the baptisms of JOHN SIM SANDS c1798 and his
brother (name unknown). The marriage and baptisms could have taken place in
ARBROATH, DUNDEE, PERTH, OR ALYTH. ROBERT SANDS was active in the SOCIETY
OF THE FRIENDS OF LIBERTY and the UNITED SCOTSMEN and was forced to leave
the country for QUEBEC in the early 1800s. He left his two sons to be
raised by a Mr SIM in Coupar Angus, another of the political radicals of the
time.

Any assistance in answering some of my queries will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Gordon Troup
