Dear Listers,
For those of you whose families emigrated from the UK (or elsewhere) via
Canada, but who now live in a different country, I've found what may be a
useful resource for you. Mine emigrated to Canada during the decade before
WW1, and we now (since 1954) live in the USA, for instance.
I've been travelling up north to the Canada Archives branch at Cloverdale,
BC when I needed to consult Canadian immigration records, because the FHL
only has very few bits and pieces of them. The Canada Archives on the other
hand has many ship's list films, border crossing and immigration records.
Anyway, I was poking around the Canada Archives website a few weeks ago, and
it mentioned interlibrary loans to any public library or Family History
Society. So, I filled out the online form, putting in the Bellevue
Washington FHC as the library. We have a PO box for the FHC, so that's what
I used, after working with my FHC manager on this. Didn't want him to be
totally surprised. Anyway, yesterday, the film arrived. I now have it at my
FHC for 6 weeks, with extentions possible upon request. I'm looking for
border crossings between Washington and BC, so I have one of the many films
of that area now.
Just thought this might be useful for some. I won't be burning tanks of
gasoline between here and the border anymore (well, not for this reason
anyway, there's still my friend's salmon catch I have to help him eat :)
