Hi Everyone,

Let me start off by stating that I am researching Mather, Dear, Mitchell, Thomson, Greig, White, Williamson.

I spent the afternoon at our local Family History Centre in Ottawa hoping to find the birth record of my husband's ggggrandfather, David Mather born abt. 1770 but unfortunately, no luck. It seems that maybe his birth wasn't registered. However, I did come across something so interesting that I want to share it with everyone on the list. It's a birth record from a Montrose old parish register, and reads as follows:

1799
Horatio Rofs, first son of Hercules and Henrietta Rofs of Rossie, born at Rofsie Castle the 5th day of September and baptized 27th October.
Godfathers: Rt. Hon. Horatio Lord Viscount Nelson
John Parish Esq. (Senior)
Godmothers: Rt. Hon. Lady Jane Stewart
Rt. Hon. Countess of North Esk

Although it was of no use to me in my research, I jotted it down anyway for no other reason other than to show my husband and continued on until I came across a birth entry dated 7 Feb. 1811 which read: To David Dear, servant, at Rofsie Castle and wife Ann Mitchell, a son, David. There were 3 other entries for 3 more sons of David and Ann - 1815, 1817 and 1819. 1820 was the end of the film - and I'm just getting started!

I have a lot more checking to do but I think that this David Dear and wife, Anne Mitchell are the parents of Susan Dear, my husband's gggrandmother. According to all the information I have received so far, her parents were David Dear and Anne Mitchell. My David Dear's occupation was gameskeeper so this could fit.

I am wondering if anyone on the list could give me some information on Hercules and Henrietta Rofs and Rofsie Castle. I did check out some castle sites but unless I can't see for looking, there doesn't seem to be any information on this place. I would certainly appreciate your help!
