I've wondered that many a time myself when passing by.

Johnston (not always the most reliable source) doesn't mention Fonah, but he
suggests that Fonab (near Pitlochry) is from Gaelic 'fonn aba' meaning 'land
of the abbot'.

I've posted the query on the Scottish place names mailing list - I'll let
you know if there is any response.
