In my case, the surname is a real mess. I'm fairly sure I've traced my
lineage in the
U.S. back to Peter Arnot (sometimes spelled Arnout), who died in Orange
Co. NY in
1764. I don't know if he was the original Scottish immigrant, but I'm
inclined to think
it was one of his ancestors.

A few generations later (3, I think), the name has been changed to
Arnott (i.e.,
another "t" added). A couple of generations after that, it became
Arnett (i.e., with an
"e"). I actually can trace who had it spelled which way (if I'm
correct, that is).

Arnett is still the way my branch of the family spells it, but I've
heard some lines have
rather recently become Arnette. (In fact, when my family was counted in
the 1920
census in Monroe Co., KY, the name was recorded as Arnette.)

So, the surname before 1764 was either Arnot or Arnout. Since then, it
could be
Arnott, Arnett, or Arnette.

Thanks for your help.

John B. Arnett, Sr.
