Could I ask you to consider web publishing of your index rather than hard
copy:
The beauty of web publishing is:
No investment in stock
Much lower cost as you don't need to pay for paper and printing
No stock to handle
Able to be updated and errors corrected
Can be burnt onto a cd for about $5 at will, if you run out.
Much greater availability in practice as most will not buy it if there are
only a few names of interest
Greater feedback from people who see it on the web as they can drop an email
in no time and without the additional cost of postage.
CD's can be distributed through Local and other family history societies at
nominal cost (about $5)
CD's can be made available through libraries
Most libraries, offices and schools have internet connection even if only
about 25% of homes have it, so it is not discriminating against those
without a computer.
Can notify members of mail lists and newsgroups as not a commercial product.
Often people say that the profit on the book is what keeps the Society
going. Frankly, I don't believe this to be true in most cases. Once you
deduct the costs of printing and distribution the profit per copy is likely
to be say, $5 per book on a nett, nett basis. Whereas the cost of the book
to the purchaser might be say, $20.
One Society told me they have sold on average 20 copies of 4 publications. A
total nett, nett profit of $400, over a number of years. An advertisement by
a local motel or similar tourist related organisation in a directory will
cost that much. If sponsorship could be obtained of $100 for each book, and
the book published on the internet, then the market would increase from 20
people to hundreds of people. This would raise the profile of the society,
increase knowledge of the area, and provide valuable information for other
genealogists. Those whose families are featured would probably still buy a
book as they would want a hard copy and sales might actually increase!
One of the great motivators of volunteers is that they wish to contribute, t
o do their bit, to help others. All the work they have done does far less
"good" for others if the distribution is restricted because of the need to
make $5 per book, and you consequently only help 20 people. The "good" they
are doing can be given to far more people, giving your volunteers far
greater recognition within the genealogical community.
You can substitute your own numbers here, but I would ask you to consider
internet publishing, even if as a supplement to the book and delayed, say,
12 months.
No matter what your final decision, I would greatly appreciate a copy of the
index and the full details of the book for the Bellingen Gen Web books page:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~nswbelli/books.html which has a number of
searchable indexes for North Coast books on line.
