Hi Karan

Thanks so much for taking the time to answer my query.

I'm not too sure where I go from here but I do know that the family arrived in
Auckland on the Waihora on 7 June 1897 so perhaps I can somehow track down some
embarkation documentation showing the address they were leaving in Sydney to see if
it matches the entry in the Sands Directory in order to see if this George Ashton is
my neighbour's grandfather.

As he was listed in the 1897 directory:

1897 Fiche No. 262 P.560
ASHTON, George 12 Little Norton St

do you have any idea what date that was compiled please? - ie I wonder if it was
before June?

Do you have any idea how I can find out what electorate Little Norton Street was in
please Karan. I have just looked at a street map of Sydney and see that it is
near or in Surry Hills - is that an electorate name as well as a suburb? If I track
down the electoral rolls 1894-1897 would I expect to find husband and wife listed?
Would they be on the electoral roll if they had arrived from England 1893/94 and
only lived there until 1897.

Sorry about all the questions but if you or anyone on the list is able to answer any
of them I would be very grateful.
