On the afternoon of Christmas Day [1835] the neighbourhood of Bathurst,in a
south westerly direction, was deluged by the descent of a water-spout.
The column was of awful magnitude, and its ? did serious damage amongst the
flocks grazing in the course of the torrent towards the river.
It was nearly midnight, when the inhabitants of the Township were alarmed by
the tremendous rushing of a vast body of water down Queen Charlotte Vale,
which came rolling onwards like a sea, carrying with it fences, sheep, and
whatever was in its course.
By daylight the flood had subsided, but all communication with the other
side of the river was cut off for the time, the consequence of the dangerous
condition of the creek, which bounds the Settlement.
Colonel Morriset in endeavouring to cross, was thrown out of his gig and
narrowly escaped drowning, the mail was conveyed across by means of a
ladder, and numerous horses and oxen were washed down stream. Several drays
loaded with wool were overturned, and much damage was done.
NB THe Bathurst Bridge Party is stationed within a quarter of a mile of
distance, but the Overseer cannot render assistance, not having orders to do
so.
