Good afternoon,
I would like to enlist your help in knocking down my brick wall.
John HALEY was born about 1815 to Michael HALEY and Mary BUTLER in Cork.
He married Mary FARRELL on 24/6/1850 in St Marys Church, Sydney. Their usual place of residence is listed as Cooks River on the marriage certificate with witnesses Garrett KELLY and Susan QUIGLEY. The surname is spelt HEALY on the certificate.
John and Mary had a son James born 8/8/1851 in Parramatta Road, Sydney. He was baptised 31/8/1851 in St James, Cumberland with Edward and Margaret KEANE as sponsors.
Family rumour has it that James was born on the ship bringing his parents to Australia and his birth wasn't registered until three years later. I don't know if there is any truth in this as I have been unable to find the ship they arrived on. Also this would mean his parents were unmarried at the time of his birth and for two years after.
John later married Mary Ann MALEY and had eight more children, moving to Leyburn Queensland in the mid 1860's. On John and Mary's death certificates it is noted they were married in Sydney when Mary was 15. She was born in March 1838 so this would make the marriage about 1852/53.
My stumbling blocks are that I have been unable to find a death for Mary HALEY nee FARRELL, a marriage to Mary Ann MALEY or births of their first three children, Anne, Margaret and Elizabeth. Also John's arrival date in Australia is a mystery.
I would be grateful for any advice.
Thanks in anticipation.
Lee in Lennox Head
