Subject: [AZORES-L] The first Pereira to the Azores
Date: Wed, 01 Sep 1999 07:58:13 -0700
The first "known" Pereira in the Azores was from the noble line of Pereira.
João Garcia Pereira:
He's listed in Nobiliario da Ilha Terceira as the first Pereira to arrive
in Terceira:
TITULO LXXIII - PEREIRAS
a el-rei.
Here is an English translation of something about this same person:
In the reference "The Pereira Family" by Antonio Ferreira de Serpa, 1929,
in a translated English version, it says:
"Between 1501 and 1518 there arrived on the island of Faial two individuals
of the higest social order from the most legitimate nobility of the
Kingdom. They came in flight, in search of asylum. They were John Garcia
Pereira and George Peixoto de Carvalho.
"John Garcia Pereira was the legitimate son of Garcia Alvares Pereira and
of his wife Lady Agnes de Magalhaes, niece of the Lords of Ponte da Barca
and Garcia Alvares Pereira who was the legitimate son of Gonsalo Pereira
from Riba de Vizela and of his wife Lady Philippa Henriques. (Gonsalo
Pereira being a member of the Council of War of Alphonse V and also the
brother of the Count of Feira)
Then there is another Pereira line from Tristão Martins Pereira:
He's listed in Nobiliario da Ilha Terceira as the first in the line of
Pereira Marramaques, Titulo LXXIV, pg. 277, vol.2:
Then there is D. Isabel Pereira Roxo or Sarmento who married the above João
Garcia Pereira on Faial, in about 1470, I estimate. She was the daughter of
Gonçalo Pereira "o Roxo" the conde da Feira and his wife Maria Sarmento,
senhora de Vigo. All names Sarmento on Faial and surrounding islands come
from her, so are also linked to this same noble line of Pereira. Often, a
Sarmento is found as PEREIRA SARMENTO, on Pico and Faial.
I don't who was the first Pereira on Santa Maria or São Miguel. Anyone know?
