Subject: [AZORES-L] Colonizers of Portugal
Date: Wed, 1 Sep 1999 19:43:41 EDT

Why are we all thinking that many sons of noble families were fleeing
"something" in Portugal. The truth is that many of the earlier colonizers
were 2nd or 3rd sons without much of an inheritance in Portugal, and
certainly not from the most noble of noble families. They left Portugal to
''better" themselves, by this I mean, to acquire land and riches. Many went
first to Madeira and then to the Azores and later to India and the East.
Azoreans, too, left for India, and many became quite wealthy there.
