The early colonizers of Sao Miguel and DATES. Dates in this time period can
be confusing. I have many notations in records that the colonization of Sao
Miguel was about 1444 or thereabouts - some write about 1440. That is the
information I received from most books read in the past.
Andy Raposo wrote and asked me about this. When I first wrote about the
first Pereira on Sao Miguel, Vasco Pereira, I had written that he had
arrived with Goncalo Vaz Botelho about 1440-44 on Sao Miguel. And then I
remembered that only that day I had read in Rodrigo Rodrigues' book that
these first colonizers arrived about 1450. And so that was the date I used.
Myself, with Botelho ancestors like Andy, do prefer the 1444 date. We have
dated ancestor's birth, etc. and this creates a problem. This is why I now
date births of ancestors and all their siblings to a time period. Children
of ancestors where there are no attested dates are written as abt 1500-20.
Most of these genealogical studies list the sons first and the daughters
last, and usually one has no idea as to which child is the oldest or for that
matter, the youngest. Sometimes the children are not listed in the correct
order and often many children are omitted from the records, because of error
or lost records.
