Subject: [AZORES-L] Social Security Index (update) at Rootsweb
Date: Sat, 4 Sep 1999 00:46:51 EDT
For those doing more recent (20th century) research:

*Your ancestor must have registered for the Social Security Act in the late
1920's or the 1930's (I don't have the date in front of me).
*Someone must have collected your ancestor's Social Security death benefit
for your ancestor to be listed.
*If you don't find your ancestor it's probably just that no one claimed
his/her death benefits, so don't depair. You can still get the SS# off your
ancestor's death certificate and still get the SS-5 (the application you fill
out to get a SS Card).
*Self-employed ancestors weren't entitled to Soc. Security until 1955-1956.
*The SS-5 gives you the NAMES OF THE PARENTS of the ancestor, and an alleged
birth date. I can't remember if they tell you place of birth too (if they
do, it's rather general, i.e. "Portugal" or "Azores".)
