Dear Joe,
One other thing I would check is the World War I draft registrations....all
men of eligible age had to register for the draft, whether a citizen or an
alien.....and your Jose Pereira Golarte would be of that age. I have looked
through many of these in Alameda County, CA and the majority of them give
"Portugal" or "Azores" or which island for place of birth....but here and
there a specific village is named and I would sure give it a try. It will
also give his date of birth and you can see if that coincides with your info.
You can look at this on microfilm through your local FHC.
I don't know if there are any records of fraternal organizations that can be
checked for the east coast (does anyone on the east coast know about
this?)......maybe you can inquire at the library in New Bedford or Taunton.
These records MOST USUALLY do give the village in the membership rolls that I
have seen. Most men did join these organizations out here and I know
researchers that have discovered their ancestors village in just this way.
On his parents names....I would bet the mother is Franisca as I have never
seen Ricarda....but I have not seen everything:)
There are 13 parishes on Faial.....if I was digging for the needle in the
haystack, I would try my main village of Castelo Branco as I do know that the
combination of "Pereira Golarte" is found there (as it would be in other
villages too)....but I do have a Jose Pereria Golarte in my lines (but born
in 1737). The fact that the marriage witnesses had the name Vargas would
also be a good reason to look in this village as it is a real stronghold of
the Vargas surname (again Vargas is found in many other villages).....but it
is VERY common in Castelo Branco.
Good Luck!
