Hi Ron,

I am answering to the list since others will probably be interested in your
family.

I immediately recognized what the original name should be for him:

"António Garcia da Rosa"

"Garcia da Rosa" is a very popular name combo on Pico and several branches
settled on Faial, but the ones I have noticed on Faial usually came from
Pico. The main places for Garcia da Rosa are these villages on Pico:
1. Madalena
2. São Roque

And the surrounding towns to these two places above. I have reason to
believe all named Garcia da Rosa on Pico originate from São Roque, but that
will be the subject of my future books on each village of Pico and I won't
give more details now.

If you think Louise was also Portuguese, her original name in Portugal was
Luisa or formerly spelled as Luiza (not to be confused with LUZIA).

This Brown name seems Portuguese and I have a hunch it is a translation of
the Portuguese name CASTANHO. If true, Castanho is not such a common name
on Pico or the other islands of the central group. I have one ancestors
named Capitão Castanho from Pico in the 1600s from Santo Amaro, I forget
his first name. The name appears mostly around the Piedade, Santo Amaro,
Ribeiras end of the island, but there are some elsewhere (with origins from
the former places).

His first name was DOMINGOS.

Here is the first place you have a solid piece of information. This
location is surely "Lajes" which even now is spelled the old way of
"Lages." But that 1854 date confuses me since you say her child, below, was
born between 1848 and 1874. So I assume you say she died in 1854 only as an
estimate of when she was surely living...

Her name was CONSTANCA or more likely CONSTANCIA, sometimes spelled as
CONSTANÇIA. Since you don't list a husband for her, should we assume she
never married?

Enos comes from Ignacio (now spelled as "Inácio"). I don't remember seeing
ENOS as a first name before. It is usually the surname in the U.S. like
Manuel ENOS, who was originally Manuel Ignacio in Portugal. So Enos Brown
might have been "Ignacio Castanho."

>15. Katherine

If she is from Portugal, her name was CATHARINA (now spelled as "Catarina").

Hope that helps.
