Subject: [AZORES-L] Lopes & Silva Surnames

Hello: I am a newcomer to this list. I am researching my husband's
maternal side. Mary Lopes (Silva)
was first generation born Portuguese-American. Her birth date was
7-15-1888 and place Mill Valley
CA. The reason for the name Silva was her father Manuel Lopes worked at
a hay & feed barn for
a man named Silva. Manuel also stored his hay& feed there. When Mr.
Silva died everyone
assumed he was a Silva since that was the name on the barn "Silva's Hay
& Feed" so
he told the family we are now Silva. The name was never changed
legally.Mary
LOPES (Silva) had three siblings. Manuel LOPES Jr.,Isabella LOPES,
(married name Wolfe) and Lida or Lyda LOPES (married name
Leonasia). He does know his grandparents were from the Azores.
He has cousins in Hanford, Ca. with the surnames of Dutra,Rose
(Rosa?),Costa.Any information greatly appreciated.Best Wishes
