I enjoyed the account of St. Roch very much. Some versions say that a dog,
not the gentleman Gothard, brought him food (pieces of bread) while he was
out in a cave (instead of a hut) coping with the plague. Hence, the
faithful dog is portrayed at his side in most statues and images of him.

St. Roch is one of our favorite saints because we live on St. Roch Ave. in
New Orleans, just 2 blocks from the St. Roch cemetery (which was, oddly
enough, founded by a German priest in Thanksgiving for having lost NONE of
his parishioners during one of the frequent Yellow Fever epidemics).

In fact my Grandfather Joseph Bettencourt (grandson of Custodio de
Bettencourt of Graciosa) was sexton of the cemetery for a few years in the
early 19-teens.

So there's my Portuguese connection!

History is such fun!!

Love y'all,
