Because of my interest in Pico, John Vasconcelos sent me some information that I know many others in my area will appreciate knowing. I wish I could attend, but don't think I will be able to make it.

Here is the data from John:

The "Filarmonica União e Progresso" from Madalena Pico was here in Artesia
this past weekend to participate in our "Festa de Espiritu Santo". After
hitting Disneyland, they were going to be working their way north to the SF
bay area with stops in Livingston and Tracy on the way. Next Saturday and
Sunday they will be guests of the Tracy band so if you have contacts there
you might get a hold of them on the schedule of events. Apparently on
Saturday the 4th there is going to be some sort of welcoming ceremony with
participation of "President da Camara (Madalena?), Consul de Portugal, and a
representative of California Government.

I would heartily recommend attending since they are pretty darn good. In
addition to the standard music you'd expect from an Azorean filarmonica they
play some pretty modern stuff and play it well.Some of their selections
included the theme from the "Lion King" among other fairly contemporary
pieces. Their leader is Manuel Vieira Machado from São Roque who's won
several awards including some on the continent.

>From Tracy they go to San Jose and tour around the bay area appearing with
several of the bay area Filarmonicas.
Hope you have a chance to see them.
