I am trying to find out information about my GGGrandfather (who died at sea on a whaling ship accident) and his ancestry

I dont even know where to begin to find out anything but the family says he was from Sao Jorge.

Is there anywhere anyone can suggest for a starting point to find out more about him?

His name was Manoel Verisimo Azevedo and he was married to Anna Candado who was born in Riberia Seca, Sao Jorge. I do have her birthdate, but know nothing about his birthdate, parentage, or siblings, nor of hers.
I do know that after he died, Anna came to the USA with their children, and settled in the San Joaquin Valley of California.

I would appreciate any advise on this. I do have birthdates of the children, but other family members have not located any additional information from them, either from what I have been told so far.
