Colleagues
Keep those letters going to the governor. This is really starting to pick
up steam - and WE ALL NEED TO GET BEHIND THIS ONE. FOR ONCE, LET'S STAND
UP AND BE COUNTED. WE WILL NOT TAKE THIS ABUSE ANY MORE. WE ARE HERE, WE
PAY TAXES, WE VOTE AND WE DESERVE EQUAL TREATMENT IN THE BUDGET. A
confidential source has told me that the Governor's office is starting to
inquire about who are these Portuguese-Americans - I am not making this up -
this is honest truth. SO LET'S KEEP UP THE PRESSURE.

Dear Governor Davis,

As a Portuguese-American voter, I am shocked and appalled by your recent
veto of two items in the budget for Portuguese Studies for the California
State University system, one of which was to match funds from the Government
of Portugal. Given the small amount of money involved in this
appropriation, in the context of a gigantic budget, the vetoes do not speak
well of your concern for the over one million Portuguese-Americans in
California.

I challenge you to get to know your Portuguese-American constituents. You
will find that they are a hard-working and proud people who rarely ask for
government assistance. I challenge you to reflect on why you singled out
this group for elimination from the budget. I also challenge you to rethink
your decision and
change your vote.

While you vetoed all items for Portuguese Studies, you approved spending
$100,000 at San Francisco State University for an art exhibit and granted
Assemblymember Anthony Pescetti $500,000 dollars for the Italian-American
Heritage Foundation in Sacramento. We interpret your decisions as a direct
affront to the Portuguese community of California.

I trust that you will look further into this issue and rectify this action.
