Friday, August 3rd, 2001 - FERNANDES, JOHN (JOAO JORGE) - of Rye, NY,
formerly of New Port Richey, Fla., died peacefully with his family at his
bedside on August 1, 2001 at the Calvary Hospital in the Bronx after a long
courageous battle with cancer. Born on February 24, 1931, in Ribamar,
Lourinha, Portugal to the late Manuel and Maria Neto Fernandes, he was 70.
Mr. Fernandes served in the Portuguese Army for 2 years, married his loving
wife, Maria Mercedes of 47 years, then settled in the U.S. in 1954. Employed
first in construction he then joined the General Motors Assembly Division in
Tarrytown, retiring in 1986 as a member of U.A.W. Local 664. John enjoyed
lobster fishing in Long Island Sound even during the harsh winter months as a
supplement to support his family and every year he would visit his native
Portugal. While in Florida he fished, found time to restore a vintage boat
and was a devout parishioner of our Lady Queen of Peace Church in New Port
Richey. For many years he was a member of several prayer groups, including
the Charismatic and the Cenacle groups. Devoted father of four daughters,
they are; Mary (Stanley) Michunovich, Alice (Ronald) Salvatore, Marguerite
(Mark) Cotte and Elizabeth Fernandes. Fond brother of Jose M., Pedro and
Lourenco Fernandes and Maria C. Eugenio. Cherished grandfather of Alissa,
Peter, Alexis, Ronald Jr., and Anthony, the youngest. Also survived by many
nieces and nephews. Friends may call at the William H. Graham Funeral Home,
1036 Boston Post Rd., Rye, NY (967-0142), on Friday from 5-9pm. Funeral Mass
at Resurrection Church on Saturday at 11am followed by entombment at Gate of
Heaven Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions to the Cancer Support
Group, 933 Mamaroneck Avenue, Suite 102, Mamaroneck, NY 10543, preferred. "We
