Growing up in Bristol, RI, my mother remembers butchering days as being big
deals, also. Neighbors would gather at my grandfather's house to slaughter
their large animals. (He raised pigs and chickens.) The woman would bring
large bowls and waitng nearby to catch the blood, and they tried to keep the
children out of the way (and, I think, out of sight of the butchering). They
were quite poor (depression era), so they were careful to use every possible
piece of the pig. And, yes, the stomachs were blown up and given to the kids
to use as balls. (My mother always wanted a colorful plastic ball that she
saw in a store, but it cost something like a nickel, and the family didn't
have a nickel to spare for trivial things like toys.) My grandfather also
made homemade wine in his basement from his own grapes, and a neighbor
apprarently made moonshine in his basement (and was arrested for it).
