Thanks for your response (even if I did get my hand smacked.) I apologise for the lack of the upper case surname. With all the mailing lsts having their own rules can be hard for oldies to keep up with them.
As far as the 1881 census goes Richard was in it under BASTEN so that was why you didn't find him. I was testing the water hoping that someone else might be researching that family. I do at the moment have it all under control even though it can be slow work as I have to use snail mail our nearest research libaries are about two hours away and the nearest FHC is an our away so as a member of NZSG I use a lot of their research services. But I most certainly watch and read the queries on the list and perhaps learn a little about Berkshire
