Hello,Listers,
I am a new subscriber to the Brailsford list,although I have,over the
past couple of years been in touch with some of you via the rootsweb
/Derbys. or Notts. lists. Since then,I have done a little more work on my
Brailsford ancestors,as follows.
My paternal grand-mother was Mary Ann nee Brailsford,(6.3.1862 -
24.2.1940).
Mary Ann was the eldest daughter of Henry Brailsford and Priscilla, nee
Riley. There were three other children,John Henry,
b.Sep.1/4 1863,Hannah,b.1864/5,d.?1938,and William,b.1869/70,d.?1937.
Henry married Priscilla at St.Peter's Parish
Church, now Sheffield Cathedral,on 19.5.1861,and the family grew up in
Sheffield. Henry, however, was not born in Sheffield,
but, according to censuses,in (East) Retford,Notts.,and his parents moved
from there to Sheffield 1844-51.
Priscilla died on 25.9.1889,and Henry died on 12.5.1915,aged 75,
(it says??). The death certificate states that an 'E.Brailsford, son, was the
informant, but I have no knowledge of such a man.
Henry's parents were Stephen and Frances,(Fanny),nee Parker. Stephen
was baptized on 4.2.1816 at Hayton,about 3
miles NNE of Retford. On 17.2.1834,he and Frances,(bpt.2.11.1814 at
Clarborough,about a mile from Hayton),were married,at Clarborough. Both
their sons,Henry,?b.Mar 1/4,1842,and Joshua,? Mar.1/4 1845,were born in
Retford. The family is listed on the 1851 Sheffield census, but Joshua does
not appear on the 1861 census,? died shortly after census day, before August.
Stephen and 'Fanny' are listed in the Clarborough 1841 census.
Stephen,a labourer, presumably moved to Sheffield for work,(in the steel
industry),but for some reason, returned to near Retford and worked as a
labourer. Fanny died,maybe at home,in S.Leverton,about 4 miles from
Clarborough,and 5 from Retford,on 23.11.1894,and Stephen died in Clarborough
Workhouse on 5.12.1894. Their son,Henry, travelled from Sheffield for the
funerals.
Stephen's parents were Joshua and Jane, nee Rowland. Joshua was baptized
at West Drayton,about 4 miles south of Retford,on 25.11.1787.Jane,the
daughter of James and Martha Rowland, was baptized on 19.12.1790 at
Bleasby, about 22 miles south of Retford. Joshua and Jane were married at
Ordsall,a couple of miles south of Retford,on 27.6.1808. They had four
children,of whom the youngest was Stephen:-Hercules,bapt. at Ordsall on
23.4.1809;Margaret,bapt. at Ordsall on
30.9.1810,John,bapt. at West Retford on 31.5.1812,and Stephen.
Hercules married Martha Hutchinson,(born in Yorks.),at Ordsall on 2.10.1832.
At the time of the 1851 census 'Herkleys Braisford' and his wife probably
had 8 children.
Henry, baptized at the Wesleyan Chapel,Retford,on 11.1.1835,'son of Arkless'.
William,born in 1835/6
Jane born in 1837/8 (in 1841 list)/Emma born in 1837/8 (in 1851 list)
Edward,born in 1839/40
Thomas,who was baptized at Retford,presumably Parish Church,on 19.12.1841
?Eliza,born in 1843/4
?James,born in 1845/6
?Alice,born in 1845/6
There is a peculiarity with Hercules and family - the 1841 census calls the
man
with this family 'Joseph',and the 1851 census calls him 'Herkleys'. The ages
of the
children tally, his occupation 'agricultural labourer' in 1841 and 'labourer'
in
1851,and his age all tally.
At the time of the 1881 census,Henry was living with his wife Sarah, and
daughters
Emma,b.1868/9;Levinia,b.1872/3 and Ellen,b.1875/6,(all born in Retford),in
Doncaster.
At the time of the 1881 census,Thomas was living with his wife Sarah
Ann,(born in
Everton,Notts, in 1852/3);Thomas,b.1872/3,and William,b.1875/6 in Worksop.
Both lads were baptized in Worksop.
Joshua's father was another Joshua, and his mother Margaret. They had
four
besides Joshua,junior:-Thomas,baptized on 15.10.1780 at Gamston,a mile or so
from W.Drayton, and about 4 miles south of Retford;Elizabeth, also baptized at
Gamston on 25.12.1784;Catherine,baptized at Babworth,on the western
outskirts
of Retford,on 30.10.1791;and William,baptized also at Babworth,on 9.11.1794.
Catherine married John Ellis at East Markham on 28.11.1820,and they
(?) had
a son named Benjamin, who was baptized at Hayton on 29.3.1816.
I have been unable to find out anything further about Joshua, senior,in
neither
Notts. or Derbys. Hercules,(etc) and Joshua seem to be family fornames, and
are found particularly in Derbys.,and I would expect to find Joshua and
Margaret
listed there, possibly in the Tibshelf or Ashford areas.
There had been 'Brailsford's in Sheffield for hundreds of years.
'Hercules
Brelsford' was a cutler there in 1624,and a 'Robert Breilsforth' was Master
Cutler
in 1688,but I know of no family connection, but I expect that are linked to
the
Brailsford village somehow.
I am trawling through the St.Peter's,Sheffield Parish
Registers,1791-1809 at
present-and a tedious job it is,and taking ages. I have found a number of
entries
for Brailsfords,(only 1 for me),including one that will interest Ken. &
Marg.
William,son of Thomas & Mary,bapt. 31.8.1806,born 3.8.1806.
William was a haft presser
That's my lot! Cheerio Eddie
