Subject: [BRAZIL-L] Columbus in-laws: doubts raised by Doug Holmes, I. .

i first deal with the line collateral to the Mellos de Atalaia.
Doug da Rocha Holmes remarked:
>The wife of Gaspar Dias de Arce was Beatriz de Mello, but my data is not
>that she is the bastard daughter of Vasco Martins de Mello and of Isabel de
>Albuquerque. I haven't totally ironed it out, either (as if it is really
>possible), but she is supposed to be the daughter of Alvaro Martins de
>Mello (wife unknown or maybe non-existant), the brother of Pedro Vaz ou
>Martins de Mello, the first conde de Atalaia in 1466 who died witout
>legitimate issue (and no legitimized issue, either).
>
>Now, here is where more of this big mess is. The father of Alvaro Martins
>de Mello (not stated in F.Gayo) is supposed to be Goncalo Vaz ou Vasques de
>Mello, the 2nd senhor de Castanheira and Izabel de Albuquerque. I believe
>this is the same Izabel Albuquerque you say married Vasco Miz Mello.
I've messed up things. Thanks for the correction; see below.
>This
>Izabel de Albuquerque is the daughter of Vasco Martins da Cunha, the senhor
>de Pinheiro de Angeija, and wife Thereza de Albuquerque (descendant of
>Portuguese royalty, as you know).
What I'm going to say is from A. Braancamp Freire, _Brasões..._, I, p. 416.
1. Gonçalo Vasques [Vaz] de Mello.
Granted all his father's holdings in 1388, the father already deceased. Deceased bef. 1410. M. Constança Martins, bef. 1388. Parents of:
2. Gonçalo Vaz de Mello o moço, `the young.'
Only male son. Lord of Castanheira, Povos and Cheleiros in 1410. M. Izabel de Albuquerque, d. of Vasco Martins da Cunha, lord of Tábua. Several children, among which Pero Vaz de Mello, later D. Pedro de Mello, count of Atalaia in 1466, dec. 1478.
`Vasco' Martins, his presumed brother, may be an incorrect transcription for `Alvaro' Martins. Chronology is OK along this line, and it is like that (but for the `Vasco') in Gayo, which took it from D. Antonio Caetano de Sousa.
So I believe our only divergence here has to do with the name of the father of Beatriz (since we agree that Gonçalo Vaz and Izabel de Albuquerque were her gparents) and whether she was legitimate or not - a minor point, in Portugal.
Next problem: the parents of Pero Correia da Cunha, lord of Graciosa.
