Hi, Folks,
And a very Happy New Year to all!
Here are a few suggestions for better use of the mailing list resources:
1. Please refrain from sending very large messages. This morning I've
reset the maximum size message allowed to 50K (at least, I think I did,
since there are no units on the number). The 50K is the largest size
message that some internet providers allow.
2. Please do not send anything but plain text to the list. Plain text
does not include executable files, image files, movie files, html files,
and so on. If you want to send these files, please send them directly to
the recipient, and not to the list address.
3. For those of you using Microsoft Outlook or Express, please make sure
that you are sending plain text alone, and not with an html attachment.
To check in Outlook, go to the Tools Menu item, and select Options, click
on the Send tab and under "Mail Sending Format", select Plain Text. (I
don't have the directions for Express.)
I only mention this because Outlook sends both the plain text and the
html, making the message much larger than it needs to be, taking up extra
room on mail servers.
4. For the best response to your query, use a descriptive Subject line.
You'd be surprised how many folks use just "Campbell" - we're all hunting
for Campbells! Better to use "Millie Ellen b.~1843 KY" and assume the
Campbell. I'd also suggest that order, since some email programs don't
have that many characters allotted for the Subject line, and it may get
cut off. In the query itself, include enough info so folks can check
their databases and notes.
Happy Hunting in 1998,
Chris
