Subject: [CAMPBELL] 7th Earl of Argyll
Date: Tue, 13 Jan 1998 18:22:14 +0000
Could anyone answer the following question?
The 7th Earl of Argyll, Archibald Campbell, created
Earl in 1584, went overseas in 1617 and entered service for Phillip
of Spain and fought in the Wars with the States of of Holland. He
died in 1634. He took with him 3 sons of the Barran McLea who went
overseas with Argyll and never returned to Scotland. The 8th Earl,
his son Archibald suceeded his father in 1641 and executed in 1661.
Philip of Spain was an arch-Catholic. In the wars with the states of
Holland he was fighting against European protestants, ancestors of William
of Orange. Why would the MacLeas be in the service of Phillip of Spain?
Wouldn't they be fighting against him?
Would anyone be able to answer this question?
The three sons of Barron McLea went on to settle in Ulster!
Does anyone know anything further about this Campbell- McLea(McClay)
connection?
Regards
Ian :)
