BEESE, George Henry Born in Calgary on March 14,1916 and died at Oak Bay
Lodge on July 3, 2007. Predeceased by Katie, his wife of 60 years on
December 1, 2004. He leaves his daughter Margaret MacKay; grandsons David
and Darrell and their father Hugh MacKay; 2 nephews Gordon and Raymond Galey
and their families, nephew Clifford in Fernie, BC; 2 brothers, David of
Victoria and Eddy of Thunder Bay, Ontario; cousins Jim and Charlie
Kilbourne. The family wish to thank the staff of Dogwood # 1 Oak Bay Lodge
for their wonderful care of George. Memorial service will be held at McCall

BURNIP, Sylvia It is with much sadness that we announce the passing of our
cherished mother and grandmother on June 28, 2007. Born June 27, 1916 in
Chase River, B.C. to Emmanuel and Serafija who had emigrated from Finland,
Julian Sylvian Salo was the youngest of three children. She was predeceased
by her parents, siblings, son Dennis (1946) and husband Clifford (1987).
Sylvia will be lovingly remembered by her son Douglas Burnip, daughter Karen
Bourne (Tom); grandchildren Jason, Jackie and Kevin Burnip, Christine and
Joanna Waugh; Carl and Margaret Burnip, Port Alberni, B.C.; Olive Dickinson,
Vancouver, B.C.; nieces, nephews and their families and many good friends.
Sylvia was an outgoing and active woman with an inquisitive mind who enjoyed
extensive travelling, golf, bridge, gardening, family and friends. She was a
long time member of the Gorge Vale Golf Club and Oak Bay United Church as
well as her sewing club group that was founded in Nanaimo (1938). A service
in Sylvia's memory will be held at First Memorial (1155 Fort St.) on
Saturday, July 7, 2007 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made
to The Oak Bay United Church Building Fund or the Heart and Stroke

CROWHURST, Donald Wensel Poppa Don passed away peacefully at the Lodge at
Broadmead on July 2, 2007 and was predeceased by his son Douglas in 1996. He
will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 64 years, Gladys; son Dennis
(Bobbie), their children Michael and Misty; daughter-in-law Lynne and her
children, Cameron, Denise and Nadine, eight great-grandchildren, Ayan,
Amina, Anisa, Quinn, Brooke, Hayley, Adain and Chelsea. Poppa Don will also
be sadly missed by his sister Theda Procher. Poppa Don joined the RCN as a
boy seaman and retired as a CPO in 1964. He then worked for the Liquor Board
in Sidney, BC until 1974. He volunteered with the Lions Club caring for the
Food Bank for many years. A celebration of Poppa Don's life will be held at
First Memorial Funeral Chapel, 4725 Falaise Drive on Friday, July 6 at
2:00pm, with a reception to follow. Special thanks to the nurses and staff
at Lodge at Broadmead for their exceptional care. If desired donations to

DICKER, Douglas Ernest November 20, 1919 July 1, 2007 Doug passed peacefully
into the presence of his Lord this past Sunday evening. He is survived by
his loving wife Barbara, his daughter Susan Lundy (grandchildren Danica and
Sierra), and his son Craig and daughter-in-law Leanne (grandchildren
Benjamin and Lorelle). He was born the second of three children in Victoria,
BC, where he lived his whole life. He was well respected in the paint and
coatings industry, working many years for Bapco Paints before forming his
own company, Dicker Martens Paints, with Jack Martens. He enjoyed many
outdoor pursuits including flying, sailing, fishing, and camping. He was a
very active member of Central Baptist Church, where he served for many years
in various roles, including as a Board member, Sunday School teacher, and
youth sponsor. He was well known for his quick wit and his love for a good
joke. He was a man of integrity, and he was completely devoted to God and to
his family. We love him, and we miss him greatly, but we look forward to
rejoining him for all of Eternity. A memorial service will be held at
Central Baptist Church this Friday, July 6, at 1 :30 pm. If desired,
donations may be made in Doug's memory to the Gideons or to Timberline Ranch

HICKS, Joseph Arnold (Arn) 1932 2007 Passed away on Tuesday June 26. He will
be lovingly missed by his wife of 52 years, Margaret (Peg), mother-in-law
Beatrice Hives, brother Ted (Liz) and children; Kathy Brouwer (Don), Lise
Suitor (Rob, Stephanie Davidson (Doug), Ian and nine wonderful
grandchildren, nieces and nephews. One of three sons, Arn is predeceased by
his parents Beatrice and Joseph and his older brother Allan. Arn enjoyed a
life filled with adventure, beginning his journey in Vancouver. His service
in the Canadian Forces from 1954 to 1978 took him to Europe, the US and all
across Canada. He served a further 10 years as a civilian at Dockyard in
Victoria. Over the years his hobbies included: model railroads, woodworking,
tropical fish, wine making, archery, leather working and scuba diving. Upon
retirement he fulfilled his life long dream of sailing his 47 ft. ketch
Neechiemose, first in the the waters of BC and then on to Mexico in 1991.
Arn will live on in the hearts of all those he touched both in Canada and in
Mexico. The memorial service will be held on Friday July 6 at 2:00 pm at St.
Cuthbert's Anglican Church in Delta BC. In lieu of flowers, a donation to

JACKSON, Kathleen Passed away in Victoria on June 24, 2007. She was born in
Sheffield, England on July 6, 1923. Predeceased by her husband, Dennis on
2003. Survived by her daughters, Marilyn (Keith Newman) and Linda (Stephen
Filgate) and grandchildren, Renee, Jackson and Teneilya. Graveside service

MARTENS, Fred Lewis It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of
Fred Martens, on Canada Day, July 1, 2007. Born on May 7, 1917, in Main
Centre, Sask., Fred was the second eldest of six brothers born to Peter S.
and Marie (Wall) Martens. He is survived by daughter, Patricia (Patty) and
her husband Douglas Cassels, Victoria; and son, Peter Martens and his wife
Najma, Vancouver; grandchildren, Heather and Bryan Cassels, and Samina
Martens; three brothers, Samuel Martens of Calgary, AB, Reuben Martens and
wife Alviena of Swift Current, Sask, Tony Martens and wife Alma of Burnaby,
B.C. and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members. Fred was
predeceased by his beloved wife, Marjorie (McCallum) in 1996 and his
brothers, Roy in 2002, and Otto in 2006. Fred grew up on the family farm
during the Great Depression, learning the value of faith, honesty,
integrity, humility, economy, and sheer hard work. He moved to the West
Coast in 1937 and worked at numerous jobs until entering Vancouver Normal
School in 1939, teaching in Peace River, Hope, and Kelowna before serving in
the RCAF as a WWII radio operator in Halifax, N.S. After the war, he taught
in White Rock and Cranbrook, before moving to Victoria and Mt. View High
School, and then Victoria Normal School, acquiring his BA and BEd (UBC), MEd
(U of Washington), and PhD (U of Oregon) along the way. Fred had a lifelong
love of sports, taught Physical Education at Victoria College and was
instrumental in establishing the School of Phys Ed at the University of
Victoria over a 26 year career, retiring in 1982. Associated with the
Kinsmen Club of Vic Van Isle, he made many lifelong friends there and also
as an avid member of Uplands Golf Club since 1956. He was an active member
of First Metropolitan United Church, serving as Chairman of the Board of
Trustees from 1985-2006. Aside from these activities, Fred's main life
project was his handbuilt log cabin at Shawnigan Lake, at which he and Marj
entertained many friends and several generations of family. Fred was
independent and active throughout his 90 years. He was a gentle and humble
man of quiet intelligence who will be forever remembered by all who knew
him. Service of Remembrance at 1:00 p.m. Saturday July 7th 2007 at First
Metropolitan United Church, 932 Balmoral Rd. at Quadra Street, Victoria. In

McFARLANE, Robert Gordon Chief Warrant Officer 1st Class (ret) 31/03/1933
30/06/2007 Bob was born in Carmen, Manitoba and passed away quietly on
Friday in Victoria. Predeceased by his sisters Doris Klassen and Pat Denoon,
he is survived by an adoring family: his wife Sannee, children Janice and
David, step-sons Steve, Craig and Chris, their spouses and children. Also
his sister Marge, brothers Red and Ken and their families. Bob idolized his
grandchildren. Bob served in the Canadian Navy for thirty years. He had
enlisted on a whim and remained to serve with honour. He was a veteran of
the Korean Conflict. Upon retirement from the service he joined the Federal
Public Service in Victoria, retiring from there in 1986 after 5 years. Bob
had a wonderful, wry sense of humour as well as a passion for golf, hockey
and bridge. Prior to enlisting he was a member of the Detroit Red Wings farm
club. He was a life member of the Gorge Vale Golf Club. Bob had high moral
and ethical standards, providing a role model for many. He will be sorely
missed. The family extends heartfelt thanks to the medical practitioners at
Royal Jubilee Hospital for their outstanding care. At Bob's request there
will be no funeral. Friends and well wishers are invited to remember his joy
of life at a reception this Friday, July 6th, from 2:00 p.m. 4:00 p.m. at
the Gorge Vale Golf Club. In lieu of flowers donations in his memory may be
made to the Vancouver Island Kidney Association or the charity of your

McMASTER, Bruce Alexander Bruce Alexander McMaster of Penticton, BC passed
away peacefully on July 3rd, 2007 at the age of 86 years. He is survived by
his loving wife Gene, four children: Louise Charbonneau of Victoria, BC,
Margery (Lee) Harwood of Oliver, BC, Susan Roper of Terrace, BC and Barbara
(AI) Finlayson of Penticton, BC, four grandchildren: Kama Charbonneau,
Kenneth Harwood, Michael Cameron, Scott Finlayson, one great granddaughter
Stephanie, brother Jim (Berna) McMaster. Bruce was sadly predeceased by
grandchildren Corey, Heather and Jennifer. Bruce spent his early years on
the boats learning to be a Master Seaman. He retired as a Pacific Coast
Marine Pilot in 1982. He moved to Ruth Lake to enjoy the Cariboo. In 2001 he
settled in Penticton, BC. A Celebration of Bruce's life will be held on July
7th, 2007 at 1400 hours at "Mom's"" house. In honor of Bruce's memory,
donations can be made to the Alzheimers Society. Arrangements have been

WALTON, Janet Bell On June 29, 2007. Predeceased by her parents, Dr. George
and Mrs. Kathleen Walton of Regina, SK., she will be remembered by her
beloved sisters, Anne and Molly; and her brother, Guy Walton of Victoria,
BC. Janet was with Biomedical Publications at Sick Children's Hospital in
Toronto and later with Veterans Affairs in Victoria. Janet's family wishes

WILLIAMS, Thomas It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Tom
Williams BCLS at age 92. Tom died peacefully at The Lodge at Broadmead on
July 1, 2007. He is survived by son Tom (Jane) and grandson Matthew,
daughter Dorothy and her children Cheryl, Michael, Dorothy and Susan.
Daughter Josephine passed away January 2006 leaving her children, Bonny,
Bruce and Catherine. Tom will be missed by his family and friends and his
personal care givers at Broadmead Lodge. Family and friends are invited to a
last farewell on Saturday July 07, 2007 at 2 pm at St. John's United Church,
10990 West Saanich Rd. Those wishing to do so may make a donation in his
