ANDERSON _ Marjory Louise (MacLeod) Born July 26, 1924 in Glen Norman,
Ontario, on the same farm founded by her great-grandfather, Marjory died on
June 30, 2007 in the Delta Hospital while sharing a quiet cup of coffee with
Blair, her husband of 60 years. Marjory will always be an inspiration to
Blair and to her sons, Craig (and Paul) and Clark (and Robin), to her
daughter Leslie, and to her four grandchildren, Cameron (and Laurie),
MacGregor (and Elysia), Nandi and young Blair, and to her great-grandson,
wee Gryffin. Survived by one brother, Duncan Rae (Velma, d.), Marjory was
also a baby sister to John Leslie (Dorothy, d.) and Donald Edgar (and
Louise). Her love of life will be remembered by her many cousins, including
Florence, Alix and Kathy; and also by Rae's children, John, Douglas and
Elizabeth; Edgar's family, Brian, Mark, Janice, Darcy and Paul; and the
children of Blair's late sister, Dorothy (Orville, d.): Lindsay, Brock and
Shelley. Marjory's immense spirit was a constant source of strength to her
family and her countless friends. From cherished times spent around the
dinner table at home on Tsawwassen Beach (and the waiting for green flashes
at sunset), to her energetic participation in the University Women's Club,
yoga and exercise classes, a favourite book club and regular bridge
meetings, so many were influenced by Marjory's relentless focus on the
positive, her openness to new ideas, the twinkle in her eye, and her
beautiful smile. For all these hours filled with joy and laughter with
Marjory, we will always be truly thankful. Please join us to celebrate
Marjory's long and happy life on Friday, July 13 at the Tsawwassen United
Church at 2 p.m. with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, a memorial
donation to a charity of your choice would be appreciated.

CALLOW _ James July 25, 1915 - July 3, 2007 Jim left his family by his
bedside to join his bride in heaven on Tuesday. Daughters Mae and June wish
him the joyous reunion he has awaited for 7 years. Jim's family moved from
the Isle of Mann to Vancouver Island with Jim at age 4 and he spent his
earliest years playing baseball, basketball, and "chasing girls" in Nanaimo.
As a young man, Jim worked in the logging industry in Ucluelet before
volunteering to serve in WWII. Jim met the love of his life in the 30 Coffee
Shop on Granville Street and married her soon after. Jim and Jo were a
stylish pair with an infectious zeal for fun and life and love. They were a
daily part of their daughter's lives and were sought out by their
grandchildren and great-grandchildren for company and a good laugh. Jim was
a very talented, self taught pianist and organist who played at all family
occasions and at Renfrew United Church. Jim, who lost Jo in 2000, honoured
his wife's memory every day since her death and remained a cherished and
valued part of the family they led together. He was able to live on his own
in the home they shared until his life ended suddenly this week. Loved and
dearly missed by his two girls, Mae (Wuttunee) and June (Duggan); their
grandchildren, Glen (Judy), Leslie, Gaye (Drew), John, Paul (Trish), and
Michelle; their 12 great-grandchildren and 4 great great-grandchildren.

DENGLER _ Siegfried September 11, 1930 - July 2, 2007 It is with profound
sadness that we announce the passing of Sig (Siggy) Dengler on July 2, 2007,
at Bastion Place, Salmon Arm, after a courageous and difficult battle
against cancer. Sig leaves to mourn his loving companion of 17 years, Mary
Revell, his son and daughter, Chris (Sylvia) Dengler and Kim (Frank)
Wakelin, Mary's son and daughter, Todd (Geraldine) Zaharko and Tammy
Zaharko, and seven grandchildren. Sig is survived by his two sisters, Ursula
(Fred) Sibley, Vacaville, CA and Gundula Kiefer, Stuttgart, Germany. The
families would like to express their sincere thanks to the many friends who
traveled to Sorrento to visit Sig and share their friendship with him. This
was a special joy for Sig. As well, the families would like to express a
special thanks to the staff at Bastion Place for their professionalism and
caring attention throughout the period of Sig's stay and also for the
interest and efforts by the doctors and staff at the Salmon Arm Hospital.
Sig immigrated to Canada in 1951 from Germany, coming directly to Vancouver.
His lifelong love of nature, the landscape of British Columbia and its
coastal waters, led him to develop two major recreational interests,
photography and landscape gardening, and then to employment with the Fuji
Film Corporation until his retirement in 1995. Sig's work ethic, workplace
integrity, and his respect for his fellow employees along with his wit and
humour earned him many friends and the respect and friendship of all who
came to know him well while employed by Fuji Film. Sig met Mary in Delta in
1984 and the two of them became close friends and eventually chose to become
life companions blending their families and their many shared interests,
strengths, and life goals together - one of which was to create a home for
themselves that reflected their interests in skills in home and landscape
design and also one that they could share with others. Their goal led them
to Sorrento, and the creation of their bed and breakfast business, Solitude,
overlooking the beautiful vista of the forest surrounding the Shuswap Lake
area. It was their life's dream come true and their many guests have since
become both repeated visitors and friends due to Sig and Mary's hospitality
and genuine interest in others. No funeral service will be held at this
time. A celebration of Sig's life will be held at a later date. In lieu of
flowers, gifts on behalf of Sig to the CT Scan Campaign, c/o Shuswap

DRYER _ Amy Nora (nee Biddle) October 9, 1911 to July 2, 2007 With a strong
will and peaceful determination, Mom died on Monday evening July 2. She is
survived by daughters Amy Alma (Brydon) and Walter Yakimyshyn, and Gwyn Opal
Dryer. She leaves six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Marion
Virtue and George and Thomas; Grant and Cathy Brydon and Alex and Marika;
Ross Brydon; Louise Brydon; Goewin Demmon and Joel Shaw and John and
Charlie; and Shannon Demmon and Mallory. She leaves a brother Charles Biddle
in Surrey, a brother-in-law Lorne and Joyce Dryer in Victoria, and nieces
and nephews. She leaves friends of all ages throughout the province,
continent, and United Kingdom. Her husband Gordon Ernest Dryer and a sister
Irene Coleman predeceased her. She was a member of the Eastern Star. Mom was
born in Vancouver and lived in many BC communities, the last two being
Merritt and then Sicamous. Mom moved to Casa Loma Seniors' Residence in
August 2003 and loved being in the Comox Valley. She went to as many
concerts and cultural events as possible. She played a mean game of
Scrabble. She often said, "Well, there is always something to learn", and
her favourite conversation opener was, "What do you think about...?" which
was the latest local or international situation. Throughout her life she
encouraged many people to determine what they wanted to do and said, "Then
get on with it." Paraphrased comments about her include: "She had a quiet
but firm presence and a gentle often mischievous smile when we talked...I
enjoyed the bantering your Mom and I did; she was a bright and engaging
lady...I wish I'd had more time with your mom...She sorted through quarters
to find the ones I needed for my collection..." And from a man who knew her
when he was a child, "Give her a big hug for me, and whisper to her that I
love her." She leaves this earthly life taking with her a brilliant mind and
giving rest to a tired body. We wish to thank all the people who cared for
her so lovingly: the staff and residents at Casa Loma; the Home and
Community Nurses; Doctors Wiens, Winter, and Aldis; and many family members
and friends. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, August 11 at 1:30
pm at Comox United Church, 250 Beach, Comox, BC. Retired Lay Chaplain of the
Comox Valley Unitarian Fellowship, Lynda Pesklevits, will conduct the
service. All who knew Mom are invited to attend. Mom asked that in lieu of
flowers contributions be made to support the Highland Secondary School music
program. Cheques may be made out to School District #71, memo: Highland SS
Music and mailed to Secretary-Treasurer Len Ibbs, 607 Cumberland Road,
Courtenay, BC, V9N 7G5. Receipts will be issued from the School Board

Tribute to John (Jack) Emslie Jack passed away Tuesday, June 26th, 2007
leaving behind Lorna, the love of his life and wife of 59 years, his two
girls Janis and Troy, Jan's husband Jerry, Troy's husband Fred, and
treasured granddaughters Alix, Laina, and Jaime. He will be greatly missed
by his extended family and friends. John Hugh Emslie was born May 16, 1924
at Vermillion, Alberta, to parents Adella Maye Emslie and Charles Galloway
Emslie. Their family included older sister Jean and younger brother Don.
Jack proudly served with the RCAF during WW2 as a Navigator in India and
Burma. Later he obtained a BSC in Physics at the University of Alberta and a
degree in Meteorology from the University of Toronto. Jack's career as a
meteorologist involved four years of government service with NATO in France
during the early 1960's. Returning to Toronto, he became a pioneer in air
pollution meteorology in Canada. He then moved to Vancouver where he
continued for many years as a meteorologist with Environment Canada. After
retirement he served as a consultant with BC Hydro and later formed an air
quality consulting business. During his career he published many reputable
research papers in this important field, which are still being applied
throughout the world. Jack combined a life long passion for skiing with his
expertise, designing and establishing a daily weather reporting system
currently used by all major BC Ski Resorts. He was responsible for the
installation of snowmaking instrumentation on Grouse Mountain and provided
snow surface temperatures and weather data for the World Cup races at
Whistler Mountain. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion and a long
standing member of Hollyburn Sailing Club in West Vancouver where he served
a term as commodore. Jack enjoyed racing and cruising with Lorna and long
time sailing friends. He instilled this love of sailing in his daughters as
well. For the past several years Jack received excellent care from his
physicians. Heart felt thanks are extended to his attending doctors at St
Paul's Hospital, Dr Rabinowitz, Seal and Wilcox; and as well to Dr Shah, Dr
Boileau and Margo; and at Lions Gate Hospital, Dr Lakha. The Emslie family
would like to thank the North Shore Home Care staff and the staff of Lions
Gate Hospital Palliative Care Unit for their loving care and support during
his last months and days. Their compassion helped Dad remain comfortable and
gave us the strength to support and help us care for him. Jack's love of
jazz, intellect, quick wit, and wonderful smile will always be an
inspiration to us all. A family service was held in West Vancouver for his
immediate family, brother, cousin, nieces and nephew. At Jack's request a
Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Our family has requested
that any donations be made to the new North Shore Hospice, 231 East 15th
Street, North Vancouver, B.C. V7L 2L7, Tele (604) 984-5785, in John (Jack)
Emslie's name.

Barbara is lovingly remembered by her children, Roxanne (Peter Hansen),
Randall (Jill) and Rebecca; and eight grandchildren, James (Sara), Candace,

former husband, Douglas Gresham. Barbara is also sadly missed by her big
brother, Stanley Ellis and sister-in-law Betty in Calgary, her niece and

Assiniboia, SK, and attended the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon.
She left her prairie roots for North Vancouver in 1960, where she lived and
raised her family over the past 47 years. After raising her family, Barbara
spent many years working in some of Vancouver's finest hotels, where she
took great pride in managing their telecommunications departments and
contributing to their reputations for excellence in guest service, up to her
retirement from the Fairmont Waterfront Hotel in 2002. During these years
our mother also enjoyed her role as an involved Grandma, taking delight in
the development and adventures of her grandchildren. Her wry wit, interest
in current events, love of family and joy of gardening remained with her up
to her death. A Celebration of Barbara's Life will be held at Hollyburn

GREYELL _ Alice Ellen With sadness, we wish to announce the passing of our
dear mum, grandma and great-grandma in the early morning hours of July 2nd
2007 at V.G.H. Alice was predeceased by her husband, Mel in 1993, her
brother Ernie Woods of Chilliwack in 2005 and her sister Dorothy of Langley.
Mum is survived by her devoted family, son Bruce (Pat) of Bowen Island, Gary
(Denise) of Kelowna and Linda Wooding (Mike) of Victoria, her grandchildren
Katherine, Jonathan, Christine, Leslie, Martin and Michael, as well as her
great-grandchildren, Noah and William all of whom she loved and cherished.
Mum was born in England and spent her early years there, where some of her
most fond memories lie. As a teenager she and her family traveled to Canada
where they settled in Agassiz. It was there that she met and married Mel on
August 23, 1939 before moving to Vancouver. Mum was a devoted homemaker,
always volunteering for worthy causes and always there to lend an ear and
offer sage advice. She excelled at badminton and tennis and always enjoyed a
good match. Later in life her interests lead her in the direction of music
and fine art. As an accomplished pianist, our house was always filled with
lovely music and her art work adorned our walls. Sadly, arthritis took most
of the enjoyment out of art and music. Fulfilling her need to be active and
productive, Mum turned her interests to Real Estate. Over the next 10 years
she became a highly respected realtor, winning many professional awards. She
took great pride in finding just the right home for her clients. Upon
retirement, she volunteered at the Canadian Red Cross. Mum was always so
ready to give a helping hand to anyone when she was able. Alice's family
wish to extend their heartfelt thanks to the doctors and nursing staff at
VGH who kept her comfortable and eased the family's sorrow as she drifted
closer and closer to her loved ones who went before. Donations in lieu of
flowers may be given to the Kidney Foundation. A memorial service for Alice
will be held at Shannon Oaks Residence, 2526 Waverley Avenue, Vancouver at
2:30pm on Monday July 9th, 2007.

STRACHAN HARTLEY _ BSc, MSc, MD After a courageous 21 months, Strachan lost
his battle against Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma July 5th, 2007 at the Royal
Victoria Hospital in Montreal. Prior to his illness, he experienced short
but unfettered joy as an MD pursuing his orthopedic surgery residency at
McGill. Strachan is survived by his devoted wife Dr. Chloe Roumain, proud
parents Mary Ann and Michael, and loving siblings Aimee-Noel, Wyatt and
Blythe. Sharing their daughter's loss are parents-in-law Pierre Yves and
Francoise Roumain of Haiti and sister Stephanie Read and family in Miami.
While his Uncle Peter Hartley, Aunt Catherine Louvet and cousins Camille and
Lauren feel a particularly strong loss as they acted as his surrogate family
during his 7.5 years in Montreal, their grief is shared equally with his
Uncles and Aunts Ian and Mary-Louise and Susan Hartley, Glenn and Margaret
Munro, Jim Munro and Margaret Dragu and cousins Megan, Brian, Scott, Kim,
Josh and Aretha. He was predeceased by his grandparents Herb and Simone
Hartley and Ralph and Isabelle Munro of Toronto. During his 30 years,
Strachan left a powerful legacy of friendship, sport and scholarship in
Edmonton, Vancouver and Montreal. His captaincy of the 1997 Vanier Cup
Champion UBC Thunderbirds football team and subsequently of the McGill
Redmen football team are testament to his leadership and commitment to
others. Earning All-Star status in both leagues, 5-time Academic
All-Canadian Honours, the Russ Jackson Award as the top community, academic
and athletic achiever in the Province of Quebec and twice bestowed with the
prestigious Canadian Interuniversity Sports Award as one of the Top 8 most
outstanding academic, leadership and athletic performers in Canadian sports
are tributes of his tremendous work ethic and strength of character. His
successful completion of medical school while battling cancer speaks to the
bravery and determination of this truly remarkable man who wanted to make a
difference in this world. But most of all, Strachan will be remembered for
his warm sense of humor, compassion and integrity. All who knew him cannot
wonder what might have been. Why, when he had so much to give, was he taken
from us? Sleep in peace wonderful Prince. We will carry you always in our
hearts. The family wishes to acknowledge all the amazing friends and
community members who supported Strachan during his life and illness. Your
overwhelming caring and compassion touched him and the family deeply and
helped soothe his burden. In lieu of flowers, the Hartleys have requested
that friends honour Strachan's memory through the Strachan Hartley Legacy

HODGINS _ George It is with sadness, yet a recognition of a life well lived,
that the family of George Hodgins announce his death on July 3, 2007. His
wife Diane, daughter Kelly (Andrew Barnicke), daughter Kerry and son Sean
(Daphne) remember him as do his 6 grandchildren; Madeleine, Katherine,
Annabel, Declan, Angus and Bronwyn. Lilian in Australia and Benjamin in
Ireland survive him among his siblings. George Hodgins impacted the South
Delta community in a very profound yet quiet way. After immigrating to the
Vancouver area from Enniskillen, Ireland, in 1949, George worked in real
estate in West Vancouver in the late 1950's. George founded Century Group in
1957 when he saw the opportunity that the opening of the Massey Tunnel in
1959, to service a new ferry terminal in Tsawwassen, would create. George
began his development career by creating single-family building lots in what
continue to be some of the nicest neighbourhoods of Tsawwassen. From these
humble beginnings, George Hodgins and Century Group went on to build, and
continue to build, projects throughout British Columbia and Alberta. As well
as creating a company that demonstrated his ethos of building community, his
finest legacy is his grandchildren whom he adored. George's generosity was
expressed in his support for countless scholarships, community events,
sports, and his main beneficiary, the Delta Hospital Foundation. In 2002,
George was awarded the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal. This award was
presented to persons who have made a significant contribution to Canada, to
their community or to their fellow Canadians. George contributed to all
three. The family wishes to thank Delta Hospital and Surrey Memorial
Hospital for trying to make George better and, ultimately, for allowing him
to die with dignity, with his family by his side. A secular memorial service
will be held Tuesday, July 10th, 3 p.m., at the South Delta Baptist Church,
1988-56th Street, Tsawwassen. In lieu of flowers, donations to either the
Delta Hospital Foundation or Surrey Memorial Hospital Foundation would be
appreciated.

MARKS _ Anita Newman. Born May 17, 1911 Tomashov, Poland, died May 31, 2007
Vancouver. Predeceased by her parents Emanuel and Fannie Newman, her husband
Joseph Marks and her two sisters, Eve Shepard and Bel Newman Nemetz. Anita
leaves her two sons Stephen (Denise Rogers) and Leslie (Christine) and
grandchildren Nicholas (Nathalie Nettre) and Jonathan who were the delight
of her life. The family came to Canada in 1920. Anita combined the roles of
business manager, wife, mother and confidante. Inheriting the reins of
Dominion Furniture Stores Ltd. at 30 upon the untimely death of her father,
Anita, with her sister Bel, managed the family business for 25 years. During
this time she married Joe and raised two boys. After retiring, she joined
Joe as a travel agent, and shared that job with him until his death in 1980.
She then carried on right up to the end a span of more than 35 years.
Following in Joe's footsteps, she became a world traveler in her own right.
With great card sense, bridge remained a lifelong passion. Anita was a
sympathetic ear and shoulder to lean on for countless friends and family.
She was always a source of sound advice. She found time for the community.
Anita was a life member of the Eliat Chapter of Haddasah-Wizo and served as
their Treasurer for 27 years. The only great sadness in her life was
outliving so many of her dear friends and family. Special thanks to all her
caregivers and especially to Mercy Chiaverini who cared for her with
compassion and humour for the last seven years. There will be no service by
request. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to her favourite charity,

of the needs of others, he was active in his church, St. Paul St. United,

instrumental in having a school built with the help of Gyro, and was the
inspiration behind the building of independent living residences and a

McGIRR _ Francis (Frank) Arthur died peacefully at Vancouver General
Hospital after a brief illness at the age of 90. He is survived by his wife
of 60 years, Emily, daughter Elaine Bartley, son Robb McGirr, brother Bill
McGirr, along with grandchildren Brian, Jackie, Kyle, Joey, Julie, Stephen,
and David, and his eight great-grandchildren. He is predeceased by his son
Gordon (2003). His life was a testament to his strength and endurance. Born
in Midland, Ontario on September 20, 1916 he struggled with his mother and
two brothers through the poverty of the depression. He served briefly with
the Royal Canadian Airforce as a flight engineer. He began a career in
newspaper advertising with the Vancouver Province in 1947. His dynamic
personality served him well in the advertising departments of the Province
(1947-1962) and then at the Calgary Herald where he served as senior
executive Advertising Director until his retirement in 1982. He was a fierce
competitor who was never afraid to get his hands dirty and will be
remembered by the many who worked for, and with him, as a man who was always
aware and willing to help those in times of hardship. His memory of poverty
and his endless energy ensured his family enjoyed a life that was both safe
and secure. Memories of him walking the alleys on a bitter cold Calgary
winter to literally give the coat off his back to a homeless person planted,
the seeds of caring in his children that would follow them through their
lives. His retirement was filled with travel, yachting, and watching his
family grow and prosper, and slowed gently, over the years, to his daily
pilgrimage to the neighbourhood pub in Kerrisdale to have a "pint", with his
eclectic and ever-expanding group of valued friends. His death, like his
life leaves us with the memory of a man who "beat the odds" time and time
again, with dignity, strength, and caring. Our special thanks to Dr. Lutsky,
the staff of Pacific Spirit Health Center and Vancouver General Hospital for
the extraordinary care you provided. An informal memorial to his life will
be held at the Point Grey Golf and Country Club, 3350 West Marine Drive,
Vancouver on Wednesday, July 11 from 1 pm - 3 pm.

MENICAN _ Nick June 15, 1947 - June 28, 2007. After a very brief battle with
cancer, Nick passed away on June 28, 2007 not long after celebrating his
60th birthday. He will be forever missed by Maureen, and his children, Addy
and Gabe; his family in Sudbury parents Nick and Betty Menican, and sister
Ann (Doug Hayes) Menican; as well as all his many friends. He was
predeceased by his mother, Jeanne Lefebvre. Nick was born in Buffalo, N.Y.
and raised in Sudbury, Ontario in the midst of extended family. As a boy he
was an honour student and avid high school athlete. After moving to BC over
30 years ago, he became a millwright and worked in northern BC before coming
to Squamish, BC. He also lived in Toronto and Montreal for short periods of
time, but always returned to the place he loved so much - Squamish, where he
brought Maureen in 1990 just before the birth of their children. Nick's
twins were the light of his life and being their father was his proudest and
most cherished role. He shared with them, as with all of us, his love for
food and coffee, travel and art as well as building and design. He leaves
them with a legacy of love and loyalty. Nick's final hours were spent with
friends and family by his side. He will be remembered always in our hearts.

MITCHELL _ Grace Isabell (nee Watson). Born in Goodwater, Saskatchewan, June
29, 1913; died in Coquitlam, B.C., July 2, 2007. Grace was predeceased by
her brothers, James, Mel and Jack, sisters, Pearl, Clara and Myrtle and by
grandchildren, Rebecca, Michael and Nick. She leaves her husband, Gordon,
daughter and son-in-law, Heather and John Wingert and grandchildren Marc
(Aireen), Karla (Brian) and Josh. Grace grew up in Vancouver, graduated from
Normal School as a teacher and taught until her marriage to Gordon in 1941.
After raising her family, she returned to teaching at Sir Guy Carlton School
until she retired in 1975. In retirement, Grace and Gordon traveled, enjoyed
their grandchildren and, in later years, met regularly with their friends
for lunch at the casino and for coffee at the Lougheed Mall. Grace will be
remembered by those who knew and loved her as a remarkable woman. In her
youth, she enjoyed sports. Golf, tennis and softball were among the
activities in which she was involved either as a coach or a player. She was
an extremely intelligent and knowledgeable woman, with wide-ranging
interests and was an astute judge of character. In spite of, or perhaps
because of these gifts, she remained a modest, gentle, loyal, compassionate
person with an abiding sense of humour. During the last several years of her
life, her eyesight failed. This must have been a source of great frustration
to her as she had been a voracious reader. However, she met this adversity,
as she had others, with equanimity, courage and a positive attitude. Grace
was blessed with that most fortunate of events, a 'marriage of true minds'
that lasted for almost 66 years. Family and friends who loved her and whom
she loved, will miss her. There will be a memorial service for Grace at 1:30
PM, Tuesday, July 10th at St. Laurence Anglican Church, 825 St. Laurence
St., Coquitlam, BC. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, a donation to
the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in her name would be appreciated.

NODA _ Alisa, sadly and unexpectedly was taken from us much too soon July 3,
2007. Born and raised in Vancouver, Canada, September 14, 1956, Alisa grew
up exploring the coastal waters of British Columbia on her father's fishing
boat. She graduated from Gladstone Secondary School at the age of 16, after
spending her school years in a program for gifted learners. After graduating
from SFU, Alisa traveled to Thompson, Manitoba as a public school teacher
but returned as an advocate for the First Nations community. She immediately
pursued a law degree at UBC and was called to the bar in 1985. Eventually,
through her practice, Noda and Associates, Alisa became one of the foremost
authorities in negotiating Aboriginal Treaties and providing legal council
for the First Nations communities of British Columbia and the Yukon
Territories. Equally committed to changing the world through her volunteer
life, Alisa worked tirelessly with Westcoast LEAF, a non-profit organization
that works to make Canada an equal place for all women. The Nikkei Centre, a
hub of Japanese culture and archives, was also fortunate to have Alisa's
contribution as a board member. Recently she accepted the role of President.
Alisa was a world traveler, which fuelled her love for music, ballet, food
and art. Her joyful appreciation for beauty infused every aspect of her
life, from Monet paintings to crayon drawings on the fridge. Gardening,
entertaining, singing and listening to opera, were among her many passions.
She treasured quiet weekends at their cottage on Mayne Island with her
husband Mark and beloved dog Juba, where she enjoyed her last day, walking
the beaches and relaxing with friends. Alisa was first married to Roberto
Toffolo, who later lost a battle with cancer. She is survived by her husband

SHUTLER _ RICHARD JR. Professor Emeritus, Simon Fraser University December
8, 1921 - June 28, 2007 Died peacefully on the evening of June 28th in the
arms of his wife Jamie at St. Paul's Hospital, Vancouver after having had a
stroke the same morning. Richard is survived by his second wife Jamie
Evrard, his first wife Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Shutler with whom he had three
children, sons John Hall and Richard Burnett, granddaughter Tessa Marie
Hoplin (James), and sister Muriel Ericson (Roger) and predeceased by his
daughter Kathryn Allice. A happy man who deeply loved and was loved by his
family and friends, Richard had a generous, collegial temperament and wide
ranging interests in the field of archaeology and way beyond. Having spent
over fifty years in the field, Richard seems to have lived many lives. Born
in 1921 in Longmont Colorado, he attended Salinas Jr. College, then inspired
by the exploits of the famous paleontologist Roy Chapman Andrews in the Gobi
desert he went on to get an AB and an MA in anthropology at U of California,
Berkeley followed by a Ph.D. from U of Arizona in 1961. His education was
interrupted by a stint in the Aleutian Islands as a diesel mechanic with the
US Army during the Second World War. Richard married Mary Elizabeth Hall in
1951 and soon after they went off to New Caledonia with E.W. Gifford, a
legendary California archaeologist. Shortly after Richard became intensely
interested in a pottery type that had begun to appear in some of the islands
of the Pacific. This pottery, later dubbed "Lapita", became perhaps the
foremost tool that archeologists use in tracing man's early dispersal into
the Pacific. Richard also did extensive archeological work in the American
Great Basin, Hawaii, the Philippines where he married his second wife Jamie
Evrard, an artist whom he had met in Iowa in 1979, Vanuatu, the Gilbert
Islands, Tubuai, Fefan Island, Truk, Fiji, China and most recently, Tonga.
In 2005 the French Government feted Richard in Noumea, New Caledonia on the
occasion of the 50th anniversary of the discovery of Lapita pottery on that
island. Two books were produced in his honor and archaeologists came from
around the world to give papers in celebration of Richard's long career in
Pacific archaeology. Richard maintained an office at Simon Fraser University
until he died. Richard had many interests outside of archeology and
especially enjoyed travelling to Italy with Jamie, buying and restoring a
villa there, and collecting fresh figs. Richard loved expeditions, anything
yellow, the opera, the novels of Joseph Conrad and Somerset Maugham, mango
pudding, the paintings of Camille Pissarro and Picasso's huge steel
sculptures, secret pockets in travel clothing, the Oakland Raiders,
Beethoven's symphonies, chocolate milk shakes, Tiger Woods, and his gigantic
and devoted cat Boodles. A memorial service will be held at 4:30pm on
Thursday, September 20th at SFU Harbour Centre, 515 West Hastings St.,
Vancouver, B.C. Gifts in Richard's memory gratefully received by the Healthy
Heart Program at VGH and UBC Hospital Foundation, 855 W. 12th Ave.,
