HARVEY Richard Allen Lloyd (Dick) February 19, 1930 May 25, 2007 Now soaring
with his beloved eagles Dad was born the youngest of eight children to
George and Lily May Harvey in Winnipeg, Manitoba. His family moved to
Vancouver to "Ãpopulate the west "Ä when Dad was five. He used to ride his
bike past the farms on South Granville Street to fish on the Fraser River.
His life long love of the environment started there. Dad began his working
life as a butcher at Woodwards in Vancouver. An avid fisherman and
outdoorsman, he thought nothing of driving to Penticton on Saturday night
and returning to work on Monday morning. Dad's love of the outdoors led him
to a career with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. After spending time
on the Nass and Nimpkish Rivers, he worked his way up to become the first
manager of the Big Qualicum River Salmonid Enhancement Project. Later he
oversaw the start up of the Eagle River Hatchery near Malakwa. It was during
his time at the Nimpkish that he met Kathleen Leyland on a blind date in
Alert Bay. Two years later this English nurse would be his bride. Two
daughters followed shortly afterwards. He was a "Ãhands-on "Ä Dad long
before it became standard behaviour. His other love was the natural world he
lived in. He began a second career as a wildlife cinematographer. He made
several educational 16 mm films including the award winning "ÃLiving River "
Ä. He also supplied stock footage to nature television and film programs
from around the world including CBC's Nature of Things, BBC's Nature, the
Discovery Channel and the National Film Board. He enjoyed spending a year
travelling the province filming on behalf of the Department of Fisheries and
Oceans. After retirement his photography career continued. He switched from
16 mm to digital cameras and concentrated on eagles, black bears and grizzly
bears. His family expanded to include three beloved grandchildren of whom he
was a doting "ÃPoppa "Ä to. Dick is survived by his loving wife Kathleen,
daughter Jane Harvey of Victoria, daughter Pauline Rankin, son-in-law Andrew
Rankin and grandchildren Chloe, Hailey and Avery Rankin all of Courtenay. He
is also survived by his sister Ruth Armstrong of Kamloops, many nieces and
nephews, relatives and friends throughout the world. It seemed fitting that
Dad died at home just around the corner from the Lorne Hotel where as
newlyweds he and Mom would have a 10 cent beer on a night off from working
on the Tsolum River. No service by request. In lieu of flowers, donations
may be made in Dick's name to Comox Valley Hospice Society (P.O. Box 3193,
Courtenay, BC V9N 5N4). Special thanks to Dr. Edward Howard, Dr William
Tinmouth and the nurses and caregivers from Home & Community Care. Memories
and condolence messages for the family can be emailed to To
the grandchildren, "ÃThink of me as an echo Whispering softly down the ways

Virginia "Ginger" CASEY (1941 2007) Virginia passed away peacefully in the
early morning of May 16th with her son by her side. Virginia was born in
Weyburn, Saskatchewan and joined the Air Force in 1959 to begin her working
career. She moved to Ottawa in 1962 where she met her loving husband John.
They married in 1964 and began a life of travel and adventures that
continued until John's passing in 1999. They lived in many places around the
world, which allowed Virginia to explore the many exotic foods and sights
that she loved so much. Their son Shaun was born in 1967 and they returned
to Canada permanently in 1970. In 1974 the family moved to the Comox Valley
and began to meet the many friends who brought Ginger so much joy. She began
working at North Island College and enjoyed many years of laughter and good
times with everyone who worked with her. One of Virginia's greatest thrills
was spending time with the joy of her life, her grandson John who was born
in 1994. She loved to listen to him at his piano and was blessed to have him
play to her over the phone in her last few days. She also treasured her many
travels with Aunt Jean, who predeceased her. Ginger was an active member of
the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, Red Hat Society and the NIC Retirees and truly
enjoyed her lunches and outings with the many friends she met through these
groups. She also treasured her evenings of laughter and good food and wine
with her "bridge" girls. Virginia loved to laugh and you could always count
on a daily joke via email from her. When you were with her you always knew
you were going to laugh out loud. She was a joy to be with whether it was to
share the many TV shows she liked, play a game of cards or to share dinner
and drinks. She will be strongly missed by those friends and family she
leaves behind. These include her son Shaun, grandson John, mother Ollie and
her brother Jim, his wife Anne Marie and their children Shane and Amanda.
She was predeceased by her father, Charles. We invite you to a celebration
of her life to take place on May 23, 2007 at 4 p.m. at Piercy's Funeral
Home, 440 England Avenue. We also invite you to join us at her home to
continue to share the many wonderful memories and stories of the joy knowing
her brought to everyone. You were blessed if Virginia was part of your life.
In lieu of flowers donations may be sent to the charity of your choice.

Sidoroff, Leonard On May 14 the Sidoroff family and many others had a huge
hole open up in their lives with the sudden loss of Leonard Sidoroff. Len
was known for his quick wit that was always good natured and his straight
forward ways which never left you wondering how he felt. He was well known
in the Cowichan Valley as a builder with high standards and quality work. He
took real pride in his profession and a strong work ethic. Len finished his
last house, built for a long time friend of the family, the day before he
entered the hospital. Dad would feel pleased he didn't leave anything
undone. Known affectionately by his neighbors as the Mayor of North Road, he
loved being in the neighborhood and on the land he had lived most his life
especially being there with his family. Much of what defined Len was his
faith as one of Jehovah's Witnesses. Even as he faced some trying times in
his life he looked forward to a Paradise here on earth (Ps 37:11) where the
bible promises all the troubles we see now will be gone (Rev 21:3, 4). There
is no doubt in our minds he will be there. As a husband to his wife Carol he
was fully devoted. Their marriage was a true partnership of mutual support
and deep love. They were best friends. As a father to us boys, Rob (Lisa),
Rod (Monica) and Darren he never left any doubt as to his love for us, he
was always there for us. We are humbled by the example he set for us with
his patience, loyalty, consideration and amazing strength of character. He
left big shoes to fill and none of us feel able to completely fill them, but
we will try. Len was a fun grandpa to his three grandchildren Mason, Molly
and Elena. Though he always had so much to do he always had the time to play
and give them one of his big bear hugs. Len will also be sorely missed by
his father Michael who instilled many of Len's fine qualities and was
immensely proud of and thankful for his son. Having his sister Louise
(Richard) and her family showing their love for him by being so supportive
in our difficult times would mean as much to him as it does to us now. Len
was also close to Mother in law Mary Bourdin, she will miss him deeply as
will his sisters in laws Janis (Ross), and Rene (Gary) along with his
brother in law Wayne (Nancy). As a friend he was loyal, always ready and
looking for a way to help yet never expecting repayment. As a family our
thanks goes out to the doctors and the caring nurses who were so patient and
considerate to our needs over the last few days and to his friend Dr.
Pascoe. We very much appreciate all our friends and family who came up to
the hospital or called to give us support. We will never forget your
kindness. A memorial will be held for Len at the Cowichan Theatre, 2678
James St., Duncan on Saturday May 19 at 2 pm followed by a tea. All are most
welcome to attend. 89741

Elsie, Theresa MADDEX Jan. 26, 1924 May 11, 2007 Elsie passed away
peacefully on 11 May 2007 at home in Comox, B.C. She was 83 years old. Not a
native of Comox Valley, Elsie was born in Dauphin, Manitoba and grew up in
the Rossendale district near Portage la Prairie, daughter of Mary and
Charles Dromun, a farming couple of the area. While working at the airbase
in Macdonald, Manitoba at the end of the war she met her beloved husband
Fred, an R.C.A.F. pilot and on 26 December 1945 they married. They were
together almost 60 years until Fred passed away on 24 December 2005. During
those years Elsie enjoyed being homemaker and mother to her family as they
grew up in various communities on the prairies. When Fred retired in 1981
they first moved to Lumsden, Saskatchewan but soon the urge to move west
took hold and they discovered the beautiful Comox Valley. In 1984 they moved
to Bates Beach where they literally chopped a homestead out of the raw
woods. Elsie's love for gardening became apparent as she worked incessantly
to turn that property into a beautiful vista of colour. Elsie enjoyed that
beautiful property until they moved to Comox in 1996. Optimistic and
energetic, generous and kind, Elsie travelled widely and enjoyed each day to
the fullest. They were members of the Black Creek Lions Club and Elsie
especially looked forward to the annual Black Creek Lions Ride-a-thon. She
was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion 234 branch ladies auxiliary in
Lumsden, Saskatchewan. She will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by her
daughter Cloy (Doug); sons Brian (Betty), Allan (Barb), Dan (Betty), and
Lyle (Pat); stepson Dwain (Dianne); 11 grandchildren and 16
greatgrandchildren. She is also survived by brother Albert. Memorial
services will be held on Wednesday, 16 May at 1:00 p.m. at Comox Valley
Funeral Home & Crematorium, with Mr. Lawrence Burns officiating. Memorials
may be made to St. Joseph's Hospital if desired. Arrangements are being made

ROBERTA JEAN LITTLEJOHN (nee McLellan) Feb. 22nd, 1951 May 9th, 2007 The
first hint of trouble was a sore hip joint on our daily 10 Km. morning walk
in Puerto Vallarta. That was early February, 2006. On February 22, Roberta's
55th birthday, a cat scan showed that her left kidney was fully engulfed and
the cancer had already spread to her pelvis and spinal column. Some new
drugs and a powerful spirit kept her alive much longer than the three month
average, but on May 9, she quietly passed on. Roberta was a delight and an
inspiration to almost everyone she touched during her life. From the barrio
children she worked with in Venezuela as a young adult, to the students she
taught as Ms. McLellan at Woodbank School in the 70's, to the Parent Co-op
Preschool families she worked with when her own children were small, to the
Harewood School PAC, to her cohorts at the Malaspina Choir and the Nanaimo
Aquatic Centre aquasize group in recent years, there are very few who don't
have fond memories of Roberta. Her passion for cooking will be missed by all
those who were fortunate enough to taste her food; many probably still have
her goodies recipes from the years when she hosted Bastion City Harbour
Cruises. Her gardens, lovingly kept, will continue to grow for years to
come. Roberta leaves behind her husband of 29 years, David, daughters Sarah
and Laura, son Rob, son-in-law Don, and grandson Eli, as well as brothers
Bruce, Duncan and Ian, sister Catherin, and many great friends. Up until
last February she got lots of exercise, ate well, andwe all thoughtwas the
picture of health. Now there is a huge hole in the lives of all who knew
her. Roberta's family will be hosting a celebration of her life for all her
many friends at 1pm on Sunday, June 10th at the Bowen Park Centre. In lieu
of flowers, the Littlejohns would like friends to make generous donations to
the Nanaimo Salvation Army. 89350

Daphne Adela WILLIAMS Mar 1, 1916May 3, 2007 Following a battle with cancer,
it is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother Daphne
Williams on May 3rd. Daphne was born in England and spent her early adult
years living in London where she attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.
She worked at the War Office in London during the Second World War and moved
to the Comox Valley shortly after the war ended. She lived in the Comox
Valley for the past 60 years and was an active member of the community for
most of those years. She had an abiding passion for theatre and the arts and
was a founding member of the Courtenay Little Theatre where she took part in
numerous productions, both as an actress and director. She also worked with
intellectually challenged adults at Bevin Lodge. During her later years, she
discovered painting and left an impressive legacy of water color and acrylic
work that is treasured by those lucky enough to have one. She was known for
her great sense of humour, free spirit, unyielding resilience and fortitude,
colourful personality and keen mind. She is survived by her three children,
Sally (in Prince George), Roddy (in Comox) and Keith, (in Whitehorse,
Yukon). The family would like to express our sincere gratitude to Dr.
Silcox, Dr. Swanson and the wonderful nurses and staff of St. Josephs
Hospital and the Extended Care Unit for their care during this difficult
time. We would also like to express a special thank you to her friends
Margaret Misener, June Belsom and Christine Robertson for their

29, after a short illness. She was loved. Born in London Ontario, Jane was
the second of Herbert and Minnie Noble's four children. She grew up in
London and Sarnia before enrolling in a five-year nursing program at the
University of Western Ontario and the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal.
At the Royal Vic a dashing young medical student named Don swept her off her
feet. They were married in London ON on May 27 of 1950. Their life-long love
of travel was born on their adventurous driving honeymoon across the roads
of North America. Don interned in Vancouver and two daughters soon made
their union a family. They moved to Nanaimo in 1953 where Don set up his
lengthy medical practice and Jane helped expand the family with the birth of
three sons. Jane experienced the worst pain of motherhood in losing the
middle son, Ian, in a tragic accident in 1960. Despite this early loss, Jane
was an inspiration for the family; exhibiting grace and courage to her
family and friends. After becoming trained as an ophthalmic assistant, Jane
worked in the operating room with Don and later became his office manager.
She joked that Ãthe family that works together stays togetherÄ and this
family did. In the 1970s Jane and Don reinvigorated their fondness of
travel, exploring a dizzying array of countries and continents missing only
Antarctica. Her other interests included entertaining, cooking, organic
gardening, photography, and being the co-pilot in Don's Cessna. Her
interests were varied; she was a life-long student of learning and Don was
often heard to repeat, ÃHow lucky I am that I married a girl who loves
classical music AND sports!Ä Much to her own surprise she loved the ski
weekends at Mt.Washington (she didn't ski) as it gave her a chance to
socialize with many dear friends. She gave back to the community by
volunteering with organizations such as Meals on Wheels and the Canadian
Diabetes Association and was a generous contributor to Nanaimo's Port
Theatre. A joy of her life was her six grandchildren. She organized trips
and events to make sure they would all know her and remember her as a fun
grandma. In this, and as in so much else, she was successful and will always
be held in their hearts as a special person. It is her beautiful smile and
need to help that the family and her many friends will always remember. Jane
was pre-deceased by her son Ian and her parents. She is survived by her
husband Don, her sisters Miriam (Ralph Dailey) and Patricia (Elli Framst),
her brother Brian (Joan); children Anne (Neal Beaumont), Lainie (Jim
Marshall), Bruce (Carolyn), Neil (Bonnie); grandchildren Kyle, James,
Shiona, The?a, Daniel and Iain. The family wishes to thank all the nurses
and doctors in the ICU at the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital for their
kindness and caring. Flowers are graciously declined; if desired, donations
can be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association, #233-2000 Island Hwy N,
Nanaimo, BC V9S 5W3 or the BC Cancer Foundation, 2410 Lee Avenue, Victoria,
BC V8R 6V5. A remembrance for Jane will be held at 11:00 am June 16th at the
Port Theatre in Nanaimo. Sands ~ Nanaimo 88336

Erickson, Walter Walter had just celebrated his 87th birthday as he was born
on April 19, 1920, in Sorsel, Sweden. On the morning of Sunday, April 29th
he passed away very peacefully, at home, after giving his " very best " in a
fight with cancer. He will be sadly missed by his family, including his
loving wife and best friend of 60 years Wilma; his daughter Karen; and two
grandchildren Larissa and Harlan. He was predeceased by his son Ron; and
three brothers Eric, Fred, and Sigvard. Walter and his family moved from
Sweden to Northern Alberta when he was 6 years old, and at the age of 19 he
ventured out west and started logging on the coast and the interior of BC
where he met Wilma at a dance in her hometown of Salmon Arm. After their
marriage, they started out in Saltair, then settled in Rosedale, BC and
moved to Lake Cowichan in 1966. He retired as a faller at the age of 60,
moved to Duncan, and enjoyed traveling with Wilma, often in their camper
with the boat in tow. As an avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed fishing and
hunting, was a very active member of the Valley Fish & Game Club, and was
later endorsed as a lifetime member. During his years with the Club he
gained much respect, many good friends and was affectionately referred to as
" Pa " . Along with being a dedicated husband, Dad, Grandpa, bread winner,
and community member he could build, fix or grow just about anything. Their
home, and his daughters, contain many pieces of furniture skillfully
produced by Walter. Side by side with Wilma he also enjoyed making bread,
canning and cooking. He was an admirable man, possessing a strong work
ethic, a sense of invention and determination, who took pride in his work
and retained his sense of humour to the end. The family would like to thank
Dr. Roy, and the Cowichan Home Support workers and Home care nurses for
their invaluable care. Without all of you, we would not have been able to
keep Walter at home with us during the past months, which is something he
also appreciated very much. All family, friends, and fans are invited to a
celebration of Walter ' s Life on Saturday, May 12, 2007 at 1:30 p.m. at

Mildred Marion MONK (nee Lockner) November 16, 1911April 25, 2007 Mildred
passed away at St Joseph's Hospital in Comox after a short illness following
a heart attack on April 1. During her stay in hospital she was lovingly
cared for by family and friends. Her daughter-in-law Joan spent many hours
giving her love and support. She passed away peacefully with dignity and
grace while holding the hand of Kathy her granddaughter. The family very
much appreciated the love and support she received from all her friends with
special thanks to her good friend, Mary for her loving care. She always
talked so fondly about her friends at the bowling alley and the Arbutus
Hotel staff. She enjoyed having lunch with the Arbutus staff where she
worked for many years. She was loved by all who knew her and will be sadly
missed. Mildred was born in Cumberland on November 16, 1911, to Mary and
John Lockner. She grew up in Cumberland and in 1932 she ventured to
Vancouver where she met the love of her life. Ira ÃBusterÄ Monk, and they
were married on June 14, 1932. They were blessed with three sons, Eric,
Howard and Allan ÃPeteÄ They resided in Vancouver until December 1946, when
they moved to Muir Creek, west of Sooke and spent a wonderful life raising
their family in a rural community. They moved from Sooke and relocated to
Courtenay in 1958. Buster passed away July 26, 1962 and Mildred carried on
for 45 years without her one true love. She spent the next ten years in the
Queen Charlotte Islands where she made wonderful friends before moving back
to the Comox Valley in 1980. Mildred was predeceased by her parents Mary and

Madge Cole Painter (nee Petter) July 15, 1908 April 25, 2007 Madge was a
wonderful mum to Barbara (Andy) Glass and Joe (Cheryl) Painter. She has one
granddaughter, Jill Painter, who she loved dearly. She believed she would
one day join her husband, Joseph Marriner Painter, son, Joseph Harry C.
Painter, parents and four sisters who predeceased her. Madge was born in
Yeovil, Somerset, Eng. and emigrated with her parents, her twin and three
older sisters to Alberta in 1910, and moved to B.C. in 1920. In the mid
1930's she started working as a cook at Painter's Lodge, where the first day
she met her future husband, Joe. She later managed Painter's Tyee Auto Camp
and also worked in the office at Painter's Lodge. She had many interests
over the years such as gardening, sewing, fishing, the "fat club" group
where they'd weigh in, but then celebrate each other's birthdays over lunch
and other parties, but mainly she just enjoyed people and her dogs and cats
who meant so much to her. Madge lived in Campbell River until 2003 and we
would like to thank friends and family who helped her during her last years
there. The Kinsmen Retirement Centre in Tsawwassen which has been her home
for over the past two years with their very caring staff made sure she
suffered no discomfort in her last few days and she was enjoying some of
their activities and going out until three days before passing away with her
daughter beside her. We would like to thank Dr. Colleen Lee for her care
over the past 3-1/2 years which included surviving cancer and more recently
a heart attack. Instead of flowers, donations in her memory to the BC Cancer
Agency, Canadian Cancer Society, the Heart & Stroke Foundation or the CNIB
would be much appreciated. A Celebration of Life will be held for Madge in
the Granny Painter Room at Painter's Lodge, Campbell River, BC on Tuesday,
June 26 at 3 PM. There will be time for anyone who wishes to say a few words
about their memories of Madge over the years. She had a long and mainly
happy life and she will be missed so much. 88129
