Deaths (06/30/07)
Dylan Webber, aged 22, passed away suddenly in his sleep on June 18th, 2007
at his home in Nanaimo. Dylan is survived by his parents, Carolyn and Bryan;
brother James and James' partner Melissa Deschamps; grandmothers Claire
Martens and Jean Fagan; his aunt Gloria Martens and uncle Michael Martens;
aunts and uncles Cory and Pierre Robichaud, Sandy and Garth Dunn, Gary and
Louise Webber; cousins Eric, Scott, Max, and Alexa; and his loving friends
here in Nanaimo and across North America. Dylan was an extraordinary young
man, gifted with a compassionate, generous spirit and a piercing intellect.
Quick to laugh, slow to judge, and wise with his words, he was the epitome
of grace with others. His interests defied boundaries and he was as
comfortable discussing life as seen through writers like Burroughs and
Kerouac, as he was debating the finer points of professional wrestling
matches in Japan. Dylan's family was allimportant to him and he felt a great
responsibility for his parents and brother. He was his mother's dedicated
movie-watching companion and shared her love of writing and philosophy. He
and James had their own singular language of laughter and sibling
understanding. Like his father, he pursued a passion for music; he would
spend hours listening to an eclectic array of artists and playing his
guitar. Dylan was part of a group of childhood friends whose wonderful
loyalty to each other and their common interests continued as adults. He
found in technology a medium for deep expression and connection, and as he
wrote poetry, prose, and joined in discussions with people from around the
world, he found devoted friends with whom he traveled a spiritual journey.
Most defining of all, Dylan believed in love. He wrote about it, studied it
and did his best to live it always. Though he struggled at times with his
health and the Cerebral Palsy he was born with, he was committed to
exploring the possibilities in life with courage and optimism. He will be
missed beyond words, and loved forever. A service will be held at Cedar
Valley Memorial Gardens, 2347 Cedar Road, Nanaimo, on Thursday, July 5, 2007
at 2pm, followed by a reception at Cedar Community Hall. In lieu of flowers,
donations in Dylan's memory can be made to a charity of your choice. Sands ~

fight was all in vain God took you in his loving arms And saved you from all
pain. 95112

Deaths (06/22/07)
Russell Joseph COUPLAND With deep sadness, but also with satisfaction at a
life well lived, the family of Russell Joseph Coupland say goodbye to a
loving husband, father, brother and friends. Russell Coupland passed away
peacefully in his 91st year in the late evening of Monday, June 18th at St.
Joseph's Hospital in Comox. He is survived by wife Maureen, sons and
daughters: Clare, Karen, Coral and Calum, grandchildren: Ceara, Colin,
Christopher, Kimberly, and Jerod, and sons-in-law: John and Jim. Born in
Toronto in October 1916, Russell lived a life filled with the adventures of
the 20th Century with an endurance and bright humour that won him many
friends and admirers. He rode the rails in the Dirty Thirties and gained a
conviction for justice and fair play that would move him to a very active
local political and community involvement in the Ottawa Valley and then the
Comox Valley. He joined the army at the first opportunity in 1940 and served
in Sicily, Italy, France, Holland and Germany as a section leader. Many of
his men would continue to call on him decades after. After the war he met
and married Maureen Welch and they cast about for a new life. That led them
ultimately to a farm in the Ottawa Valley to raise pure bred Aberdeen Angus
cattle and to raise four children. Upon retirement, Russ and Maureen
travelled Canada from one end of the other a half dozen times until they
found a new home in the most perfect of places and on the most perfect of
streets north of Seal Bay, Seacliff Road. There, he would continue his
active community involvement as a volunteer coordinator in Seal Bay Park. A
trail is named in his honour for having helped revitalize the wonderful
green oasis that is the park. In lieu of flowers, Russell has asked that
donations be made to Seal Bay Park in care of the Strathcona Regional
District so that future generations will know the pleasures of the place
that he did. Pleae mark cheques in "memory of Russell Coupland'. Funeral
Service at 2 p.m. Mon., 25th June, 2007 from COMOX VALLEY FUNERAL HOME &
CREMATORIUM, 1101 RYAN ROAD, followed by interment at Courtenay Civic
Cemetery. A celebration of Russell Coupland's life will be announced at a
later date. IF I SHOULD DIE BEFORE I WAKE This is the statement I wish to
make To all of those who loved me best Remember the Joy forget the rest. If
there be those who loved me not The less that's said soonest forgot. The
path I chose that led me here I walked in my own shoes. Thus my thoughts and
attitudes May differ from your views. It matters not from where we start,
For if our cause is just, The world is blessed by what we've left Although
we are but dust. So who can say "this is the way" When each must find the
turning, Seek your own dream without delay, Don't spend a lifetime yearning.
Take that first courageous step. Be brave, you may soar high! One chance at
life is all we get, Go, spread your wings and fly. 94559

Deaths (06/22/07)
Mary "Marian" Longmoore 21 June 1927 17 June 2007 On the day Charles
Lindberg touched down at Le Bourget in France, baby Mary was taking off on
the farm near Melfort, Saskatchewan as the seventh of ten children born to
Michael Wowchuk and Pauline Tomasewsky. A peaceful person to the core it is
fitting that she shares her birth date with no fewer than three winners of
the Nobel Peace Prize. As with so many farm folk, 19 year old Marian and her
younger brother Steve hopped a train for the bright lights of the big city.
Melfort's light was out that day so they didn't get off the train until they
reached Vancouver. There they joined their brother John, who introduced his
baby sister to her future husband and fellow prairie e?migre?, Robert
Longmoore. Married in 1947, she and Bert moved to Victoria shortly after the
birth of their daughter Marilyn. The Island was a pretty sleepy place in
those days where they rolled up the sidewalks at about the same time that
they rolled out the mattresses so it was quite natural that two more baby
"Longmoose", Janet and Diane, came into the world in short order. After 21
years in Victoria, Marian and Bert headed back to the Big Smoke, settling in
Coquitlam. Trained as a hairdresser at the LaBelle School of Beauty Culture
and Barbering, Class of 46, she kept Bert and the girls looking neat and
trim right up until the time they could outrun her. Her chosen line of work
however was as an Operating Room Assistant, first at St. Joseph's Hospital
in Victoria and later in New Westminster at the Royal Columbian Hospital.
She did keep her hand in the beauty trade by offering each of her patients
the option to remove a little off the top and sides. As anyone who knew her
could tell you, Marian loved to feed a crowd. A large family of Ukraninian
farmers knows how to put away the vittles and Mrs. Wowchuk's little girl
learned from a master until her perogies, borsht and cabbage rolls
eventually became the stuff of legend. After a meal, when couches throughout
the house groaned with the weight of well stuffed diners, her "let's just
clean these up" could cause panic. Maternity pants with the patented
expando-waist were compulsory wear for all at Marian's table. Marian passed
away peacefully at home this Father's Day with her Bert by her side and in
the loving care of her youngest daughter, Diane. To Ukrainians, the
butterfly is a symbol of the soul's journey into eternal happiness. May the
Pysanky of Marian's life be coverd in butterflies. Lastly, we would be
remiss in not mentioning the incredible support we received from the
wonderful people at Home and Community Care. Without them we would not have
had the energy to make Marian's final journey as comfortable as it was. Our
deepest thanks. 94322

Frances Irene Schmidt (nee Abbott) 1938 2007 Frances was born in Flint,
Michigan on February 26, 1938. When she was a young girl her family moved to
Bakersfield, California, where she spent her formative years, and which she
always considered to be her hometown. She attended Bakersfield High School
and Bakersfield College before moving to Los Angeles and completing her
Bachelor of Science in Business Administration at UCLA. It was during a
visit to see her aunt and uncle in Courtenay in 1969 that she decided to
"temporarily" move to for a one-year teaching contract at Comox Elementary.
Soon after, she found true love when she met Frank at a local dance. Fran
and Frank married in 1971 and from that union had two children, Christopher
and Jennifer, who they raised in Campbell River. Fran was a devoted wife,
mother, and teacher, and was delighted that she had the privilege to teach
three of her grandchildren how to read during her last position at Maple
School before she retired in 1998. Her students, who she affectionately
referred to as her "children", will especially remember her for playing the
piano at assemblies and concerts, and for the end-of-year Fun Day which she
hosted annually in her back yard. Fran was an active member of the United
Church. She sang in the choir, was on the new church building committee, and
was president of the United Church Women's Group. She was also an involved
member of the Black Creek German Canadian Society, a representative for the
Campbell River District Teachers' Association, and a sister of Phi Mu
sorority. She was proud to become a Canadian citizen in 2001. Her kind
heart, gentle spirit, beautiful personality, and infectious smile will live
on in our memories. She was predeceased by her parents and brother. She is
survived by her husband Frank, son Christopher (Heather), daughter Jennifer,
step-son Arnold (Leslie), step-daughter Martina, four grandchildren Elaine,
Jason, Andrea, and Calvin, sister-in-law Peggy Abbott, two nephews Douglas
(Alice) and John (Paula) Abbott and their children Sara and Rachel.
Interment will take place at Courtenay Civic Cemetery on Saturday, June
23rd, at 11:00 a.m., followed by a service at Campbell River United Church,

ELIZABETH ILZA ZVEJNIEKS June 21, 1957 May 29, 2007 With stars shining
bright Birds singing her song, Her soul knowing The Bridge would appear,
Holding hands by her sides It wouldn't be long, You could tell by her Face
it was near. Her now serene body But a shell for her soul, Showed signs of
her captor It had taken its toll, To the Rainbow Bridge She'd reach journeys
bend, All of the hurting Would now suddenly mend. Walking the way She knew
what she'd find, Spooky to greet her His purr comforts her mind, Mom & Dad
hug and hold her So happy she's there, Mom's smiling so softly Caressing her
hair. The rose with its beauty Radiates strength for us all, Diamond glints
on the water Whisper softly its call, Rest now, our sweetheart Our
companion, our friend, But remember to greet us When we come to the bend.
Missed, with heavy hearts, by her companion & lover, Dave, her daughter
Mellisa (Cory), baby granddaughter Tyrene, her brother George (Marie), niece
Char (Steve), great nieces Jordynn & Jenna, great nephew Marcus, niece

Deaths (06/08/07)
Estella Mae HARRISON (nee Brankston) 1920 2007 Passed away suddenly on May
29, 2007 after a brief illness. Born in Nanaimo on December 24, 1920, she
brought the joy of Christmas to her family every day for the next 86 years.
She was predeceased by D'Arcy, her husband of 62 years, who passed away on
December 24, 2005. She was also predeceased by her parents, William and
Catherine Brankston, her two brothers (John and William) and three of her
four sisters (Lillian, Bette and Nancy). Left to mourn her loss are her five
loving children: Pauline Tortorelli, Norma Cannon (Brian), Sandra Berg
(Loren), Maureen Sanderson (Robert) and Philip Harrison (Helen). She is also
survived by fifteen grandchildren and fifteen greatgranchildren. Her loss
will be felt deeply by her younger sister, Emily Taylor of Edmonton,
Alberta, and by her brother-inlaw, Lloyd Brown of Nanaimo. Her absence in
the Berg household will be mourned by her friend and coffee pal, Donna Berg,
with whom she wiled away the hours as the two "Grandmothers-in-Residence".
Stella, who was born and raised in Nanaimo, was a member of a very prominent
musical family who provided entertainment and enjoyment through concerts and
competitions held in various locations around the Island and the lower
mainland. Stella and her sisters performed for our troops during World War
II and had many warm memories of those days. Stella brought her love of
music to her children and expressed her joy for life by singing every day.
Prior to her retirement, Stella was a long time employee of both Scotch
Bakery and the Harewood Super Valu, where she made many friends across the
counter every day. She enjoyed her work very much and often spoke of the
many friendships she cultivated during her working years. Stella was beloved
mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her patience in teaching the
little ones how to knit, how to sing, how to read, how to "plunk" on her
piano has created memories for them well into adulthood. During her final
illness, her hospital room overflowed with her children and grandchildren,
all of whom wanted to be with her as she went on her final journey. The love
she gave them everyday is reflected in their faces as they continue in life
without her by their side. A celebration of Stella's life will be held on
Saturday, June 9th, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. at First Memorial Funeral Services,
1720 Bowen Road, Nanaimo, following a private interment. No flowers, by
request of the family. Donations can be made in Stella's name to the
Canadian Diabetes Association. The family expresses its gratitude to the
Langley Memorial Emerg. team. To Dr. A. Astrein, Dr I. Siddiqui and the
nursing Team on Four South, our heartfelt thanks for your dedication,
patience, guidance and understanding as we moved through this very difficult
time. Your kindness and attention to our mother will not be forgotten.

Deaths (06/08/07)
Kenneth Roy STURDY 1913-2007 On Tuesday, June 5th, at Cumberland Lodge, with
family around him, Ken died at the age of 94, at peace with life. He was at
heart a gentle soul, with strong spirit, who gave life his best effort. He
was a resident of the Lodge for 4 years, and the family would like to thank
Dr. Helmer and the staff for their loving care, and assistance throughout
his stay, and particularly their kindness and support this last week of his
life. Ken was predeceased by his first wife, Florence, and is survived by
his current wife, Frieda, with whom he recently celebrated 45 years of
marriage. Together, they shared 9 children: Daryl, Fred, Bud, Moraine, Anne
(deceased), Ken, John, Sherry and Sandra and their partners; 16
grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren (soon to be 13). Ken began his life
journey in Toronto, February 24, 1913, was adopted by Percival and Evelyn
Sturdy soon after. As a young child he moved to Winnipeg, and then to
Vancouver. He attended Lord Selkirk School, and was a member of St.
Margaret's Anglican Church, where he and Florence were active in the youth
group. At that time, he started his long and happy musical passion with the
saxophone, playing in Salvation Army bands, as well as local dance bands
with his friends. As a young man, he helped his father in the Tea import
business, and later became an apprentice welder/tinsmith, maintenance and
general "fix-it"man in the Vancouver Harbour, working on the Marine
building, and old Second Narrows Bridge. He moved to Port Alice in 1936,
marrying Florence in 1938 and starting his family. He continued his welding
craft in the AP&C mill, also working in the tinsmith shop. He served as
president of the local Union for several years, was a member of St. Paul's
Anglican Church, Chairman of the School Board, and held the rank of S/Sgt.
and Intelligence Officer in the Pacific Coast Militia Rangers 1942-1945. Ken
also was a volunteer firefighter, and assistant for autopsies when needed.
He built his own Hallicrafter receiver, and spent many years talking to
other ham radio operators under the call numbers VE7SN. (CQ, CQ?) He loved
his game of golf, boating, fishing, tramping around with kids in tow,
gardening, wood turning, and photography. He gave years of enjoyment playing
tunes for dances, parades, and community events. In 1955 Ken changed jobs to
become Townsite and Personnel Manager for Rayonier Canada. Widowed in 1961,
he later remarried. His new wife, Frieda and her younger children joined the
Sturdy bunch in Port Alice. Ken helped plan the moving of the old town site
to the new location of Rumble Beach, before taking employment with Tahsis
Company in 1966. Ken was the first mayor of Tahsis, an honour he held in
1972. In 1976, shortly before official retirement age, he suffered a heart
attack while in St. Joseph's hospital in Comox. He recovered nicely, (many,
many morning walks with Frieda and friends) and more than just survived the
promised "good ten years" after bypass. He flourished. He and Frieda liked
the Comox Valley so much they decided to stay, and so he continued his
journey. Still loving music, he played in the Praise Band, Valley Echoes,
and Toe Tappers till his 90th year, bringing joy to many community events,
local senior residents, and sharing impromptu jam sessions with family and
friends at home. With his children grown and living far away came the long
tradition of playing Happy Birthday to each on their special day. Everyone
waited for the call! A long time resident of Courtenay, Ken was active in
St. George's United Church, a talented woodworker, still toiled joyfully in
the garden, and looked forward to many visits from many children. He enjoyed
the occasional fishing trip. And he didn't just catch them. His BBQ salmon
was legendary, second only to the diverse twists in his pancake recipes! He
was, quite simply, "the best!". A memorial service is planned for Saturday,
June 9th, at one o'clock pm, at St. George's United Church, 505 6th Street,
Courtenay BC. A reception will follow in the church hall. In lieu of
flowers, please consider a donation to a favourite charity. 92907

Fiorenza Matilde Lorenzi June 29, 1964 May 30, 2007 At the young age of 43
our beloved Fiorenza has left us now and rests, we are certain, in the open
arms of our mother Giuseppina, who predeceased her in 2005. Fiorenza is
survived and dearly missed by her family in Canada her father Antonio,
sisters Deanna (Ian and Nicholas) and Daniela (John and Nicole & Justin) and
all her aunts, uncles, and cousins in Italy. Fiorenza's story is one full of
inspiration. She was born in Toronto and was most happily anticipated and
loved. As a little girl she was strong, happy, and funloving. As a student
she was bright, dedicated and multi talented. Her future looked as bright as
her lovely often impish smile. Unfortunately, a diagnosis of M.S. in 1984
would change the course of her life. Despite ever-increasing setbacks and
hardships, Fiorenza's strength, courage, gratitude, and positive attitude
shone like a star right until the end, and were a true inspiration to
family, friends, and caregivers. We will also miss her smile, her wink, her
kisses and her devilish sense of humour. Ciao Bella... Kiddo... My Girl...
Bellissima! We will always love you so much * * * * * * * * * The family
offers our profound gratitude to the medical caregivers of Sunshine Lodge at
the Campbell River and District General Hospital, for their years of care
and support for Fiorenza. Your dedication will never be forgotten. A
celebration of Fiorenza's life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June
7, 2007 at St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church, 34 South Alder Street,
Campbell River, B.C. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Fiorenza's
name to the Campbell River and District Hospital Foundation. 92236

May 2007 after her incredibly stoic battle with cancer. Nancy is lovingly
remembered by her husband Peter and daughters Amy and Megan, her parents Ken
and Nonah, brother Alan and his family and Peter's family in Australia.
Nancy was born in Burlington, Ontario where she spent her formative years
getting into mischief with friends, riding horses and playing soccer and

Brown College in Toronto. Upon completing her studies she travelled through
Europe where she met Peter. After working in the Burn Unit at Sick Kids in
Toronto she travelled in Australia, got engaged and was married in

Health Nursing that eventually led her to Worksafe BC. She enjoyed the life
the Comox Valley offered where she loved spending time at home with her
family, playing golf, walking and coffee with friends and she loved
participating in the kids' school activities. She will be remembered for her
