PALMER, Ronald Kenneth December 4, 1917 July 9, 2007 July 9. My father died
today. But we know in our hearts that he'll continue to live tomorrow, the
next day and all the days thereafter as we remember his long and fascinating
life. Raised without a father in Toronto, the youngest of four children, he
started work at age 9 and learned early the lessons of hard work and
unfailing honesty. He also learned, he said, never to be afraid. His early
career successes and aspirations were interrupted by the Second World War
and he spent almost four years as a Lieutenant in the Royal Canadian
Artillery, serving honourably in England, Belgium and the liberation of
Holland. He was a proud and dedicated soldier. He returned to Canada and his
first born son in 1945, rebuilt his life, raised his family and enjoyed a
successful business career until his retirement in 1982. He was a sportsman,
musician, storyteller, traveller and avid student of current events and
world affairs. Even as his memory began to fail him in recent months, he
still remembered vividly the Twenties, the Depression, the War and all his
adventures that took him from Coast to Coast. He seemed to remember everyone
he met along the way. He leaves behind his beloved wife Anne, sons Ron and
Tony, eight stepchildren, including special stepdaughters Bonnie and
Candice, four grandchildren and the newest loves of his life,
great-granddaughters Lily and Hannah. If he were with us now, he'd tell a
joke, admonish us to straighten up, stop mourning and get on with good,
honest and productive lives. We will, Pop. We will. And thanks for the
lessons you taught each of us. Yours was a life truly welllived. Rest well.
You've earned it. No funeral by request. Our sincerest gratitude goes to
those remarkable volunteers and staff at the Saanich Peninsula Hospital
Palliative Care Unit and the good and caring people at Beacon Community
Services. 388545
