BROWN, Charles Dickinson April 20, 1915 July 13, 2007 The original "Charlie
Brown" was born 92 years ago on the family farm, just east of Edmonton,
Alberta. He passed away peacefully at VGH, with family at his side. While
serving in England, during WWII, as a sergeant in the military police, he
met and married his first wife Monica, who emigrated to Edmonton as a war
bride. They had two children, daughter Sherrill and son Kelvin. The family
moved to Victoria in 1956, where Charlie was pre-deceased by Monica in 1964.
He was an avid bowler and square dancer and a member of the Frontier
Twirlers, where he met and later married his second wife Lillian in 1978.
Charlie will be fondly remembered as "Poppy" to his second family John,
Carol, Donna and David, 8 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. After
retirement in 1980, as a draftsman for BC Hydro, he enjoyed, gardening,
traveling, winemaking and the occasional round of golf. He will be lovingly
remembered and missed by all. A special thanks to Doctors Egan and
Templeton, and the staff of 5A South. A Celebration of His Life will be held

COCHRANE, Violet Alice Elizabeth (nee Hearn) At 96 years passed into the
presence of her Lord on July 12th, 2007. Long time employee of Standard
Furniture. Member of Oaklands Chapel, who taught Sunday School and Bible
Class for many years. Predeceased by husband Ken and brother Jim. Survived
by her sister Rhoda Thomas; step-daughter Barbara Elliott and
step-granddaughter Jennifer; step-nephew Glenn (Lyn) Holloway and many
special friends. Graveside service at Hatley Memorial Gardens on Wednesday
July 18, 2007 at 2 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Camp

CONNOR, Gladys Edith (Happy) October 28, 1912 July 16, 2007 Predeceased in
1974 by her husband George, by her infant daughter Karen and her son Phil,
by all her siblings and by many lifelong friends, Happy leaves to mourn her
loss, her sons Larry (and wife Charlotte), Gerry (and sons Gerrett and Nash
and their mother Joy), Erin (and wife Colleen and children Carling, Lili,
Brendan and Alan), and her daughter Merry (and daughters Chelsea and
Briana), as well as dear friends and extended family members in Canada,
Australia and Britain whom she delighted in visiting with throughout the
years. Born in Bangalore India, Happy came to Canada at the age of 13,
finishing high school at 16 and going on in the depths of the Depression to
become the first woman to earn an Honours BA in Economics from McMaster,
followed by teaching credentials and a PhysEd Specialist certificate from
OCE. After teaching for several years she married and raised her children in
Nova Scotia, Ontario and BC. Always seeking intellectual and physical
challenges she studied several languages, became an expert gardener, a
cryptic crossword and math puzzle whiz, and the reigning champion of the
Connor post-prandial charades league! She canvassed for many charities,
taught English to new Canadians, participated in two constitutional
conferences, became the founding president of the only French as a second
language Toastmasters Club in the world, and travelled widely, visiting over
60 countries from the time she was 60 until her last trip at the age of 89
to Burma. She was the family genealogist and photographer, carefully
recording family gatherings and delighting in the presence of her children
and grandchildren whom she loved dearly and of whose talents and
accomplishments she was so very proud. Curious, adventuresome, enthusiastic,
fiercely independent and courageous, full of verve and zest for life, Happy
was given what she called her `crazy' nickname in 1929 and spent her life
living up to it. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Hospice, the ALS
Society or the Connor Foundation. A memorial service will be held Friday,
July 20 at 3 pm at the University of Victoria Interfaith Chapel (Lot 6).

DALGLEISH, John Henry Passed away on July 6 at Jubilee Hospital with his
wife Dorothy and grandson Aaron by his side. Born October 31, 1917 in
Hamilton Ontario, he leaves his son John Robert and wife Dawn and grandson
Aaron of Victoria, brother David Robert and wife Sheila of Hamilton; also
many nieces, nephews, and cousins in the Hamilton Area. Jack met Dorothy in
High School and they married in 1941. As a trained machinist he taught at
the Canadian Army Trade School during the 2nd World War. They moved to North
Vancouver in 1945 and for the next 7 years Jack taught Vocational Machine
shop and Drafting at the North Vancouver High School. From 1952 to 1954 he
taught Teacher Training for Industrial Arts at the Vancouver Vocational
School. An appointment, as Director of Adult Education and Supervisor of
Technical and Vocational Education for the Greater Victoria School District
in 1955, brought Jack and Dorothy to Victoria. He became Director of Adult
Education in 1961. The Institute of Adult Studies, the precursor to Camosun
College, was opened during his tenor. In 1970, Jack along with wife Dorothy
was seconded by C.I.D.A. to assist with establishing the Trades Training
Programs in Zambia, Africa. On returning to Canada in 1972 he rejoined the
Administrative Staff of the Victoria School District and retired in 1978.
Jack had many interesting hobbies. He built "Tambua" #181 and enjoyed
sailing with the Thunderbird Fleet at the Royal Victoria Yacht Club during
the 60's. Upon retiring he enjoyed camping, R.V.ing with the Vagabond
Trailer Club, traveling, gardening and working in his workshop. Our sincere
appreciation to Dr. Lisa Veres, the staff in the emergency room, and 2nd
West of the Jubilee Hospital. Their care and consideration of Jack was
exemplary. At Jack's request there will be no service. 389151

DALSIN, Clifford John Passed away on July 15, 2007 at the Lodge at
Broadmead. Predeceased by his son, Matthew; 4 brothers and 3 sisters,
Clifford is lovingly remembered by his wife of 51 years, Daphne; his
children, Clinton (Laura), Veronica (Steve), Joe, Mark and Mary-Anne; 7
grandchildren; one brother and three sisters; as well as his extended family
and friends. Prayers will be offered at McCALL BROS. FLORAL CHAPEL, Johnson
and Vancouver Streets on Wednesday, July 18, 2007 at 6:30 p.m. Funeral Mass
will be celebrated at SACRED HEART PARISH, 4040 Nelthorpe St. on Thursday,

HALDANE, Nancy Jeanne Elizabeth (nee White) 1947 2007 Passed away suddenly
in her home in Victoria BC on July 9/07. She was the youngest girl in a
family of six siblings and is predeceased by her parents, Angus and Alice
White and her elder brother Robert. Nancy was raised in two families and
spent the latter years of her childhood in the home of Ernie and Wilma
Brown. Ernie Browns also predeceases her. A strong sense of adventure led
Nancy to visit over 30 countries in her lifetime and to live in Rio de
Janeiro, Brazil for 24 years of her working life. There she taught English
to thousands of students before being promoted to hold the responsibility
for training all of the instructors for 5 large language schools. Nancy is
remembered by: her biological siblings and families; Cecelia and
children-Cheyene, Damon, Karen, Fabiola and Alex; Freyja and childrenCherie
and Hayley; Verne, Randy and wife Gail. She is also remembered by her foster
mother Wilma Brown, her foster siblings Karen, her husband Dave and children
Tara and Patrick and her foster brother Bob and wife Bev; friends in several
countries and her little dog Zara. A memorial service will be held at First
Memorial at 1155 Fort Street in Victoria at 2:00 pm on Wednesday July 18th
with a reception to follow at that location. In lieu of flowers anyone who
wishes is requested to make a donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

HALLIWELL, Dr. David Our dear father and grandfather peacefully departed
from this world on May 6, 2007. He is now with his beloved wife of 58 years,
Betty Halliwell, who predeceased him on December 3, 2006. A full obituary
appeared in May and now the family is able to gather for a memorial service
and a celebration of Dave's life. Friends are invited to attend Dave's
memorial service at MCCALL BROS. FLORAL CHAPEL, Johnson & Vancouver Streets,

HAWKINS, Olive Lydia On July 2, 2007, Olive Lydia Hawkins passed away
peacefully at Rest Haven Lodge in Sidney, B.C. Olive was born in Medstead,
England in 1907, the only child of William Tollafield and Edith Winifred
Tollafield (nee Tomlinson). She came to Canada in 1919 with her parents and
finished school in Edmonton, Alberta. As a young woman, she worked for the
Hudson's Bay Company in Edmonton. While in Edmonton she met and later
married her husband, Edwin (Ted) Benson Hawkins on December 13, 1933. The
couple moved to Saanichton, B.C. in 1940 and operated a mink farm there for
many years. After the sale of their farm, Olive and Ted enjoyed many happy
years, boating along the B.C. coast and in their travels by motor home in
Canada and the United States. Olive enjoyed curling and was a long-time
member of the I.O.D.E. She was also an active volunteer with the Saanich
Peninsula Hospital Auxiliary. After Ted's death in 1978, Olive moved to
Summer Gate Village in Sidney in 1981. She moved to Rest Haven Lodge, Sidney
in December of 1996, where she had a happy home for the last 10 years.
Lovingly remembered by her niece, Joan Day of Edmonton, Alberta, her cousin
Pat Dowse of Swindon, Wilts, UK, her god daughter Joyce Kyle of Calgary,
Alberta, her dear long time friend Olive Whyte of Saanichton, B.C., and
their respective families. Special thanks to the staff of Rest Haven Lodge
for their excellent care, understanding and compassion over the years. In
accordance with Olive's wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial
will take place at a later date. 388605

HIGGINS, Richard Davidson CD 23 April 1922 15 July 2007 Dick passed away in
Broadmead Lodge after years of pain and heart problems. He was born in
Victoria, attended schools in Oak Bay and, when he turned 18, went over to
Vancouver to join the RCAF as aircrew. Following training in Canada and the
UK, he was then attached to the RAF. He served as wireless operator air
gunner radar operator in 172 Sqdn. (Leigh Light) Coastal Command in England,
Gibraltar and the Azores. After the war he joined the RCAF Reserve 2455
Aircraft Control and Warning Sqdn. when it was formed retiring at the end of
1958 as C.O.Dick worked in the Provincial Government for 37 years most of
them in the Civil Service Commission. Following his retirement , Dick worked
occasionally in labour arbitration.Dick is survived by his loving wife,
Stella, whom he married in Scotland in 1943; his daughter, Norma (Terry
McLeod); son Rick (Deborra) and grandsons Bryan and Neil. He is also
survived by his brother, Bill; sister-in-law, Beverly; nephews, Jerry and
Kevin; niece, Janice and their families. Dick was a member of the Air Force
Officers Association, the Royal Canadian Air Force Association and the
Fourandex of Canada. Thanks to those who visited Dick from these
organizations and also to the visitors from the Royal Canadian Legion. The
family wish to thank all at Oak Bay Lodge who contributed to his care and
especially those wonderfully caring people who looked after him so well in
the declining period of over a year in Broadmead's Olympic View Lodge.
Grateful thanks also to Dr. Kevin Wylie for his many years of attentive
care. Funeral service will be held at MCCALL BROS. FLORAL CHAPEL, Johnson
and Vancouver Streets, on Friday, July 20, 2007 at 2:30 pm with reception to
follow in the Graham and Torrey McCall Family Centre. Flowers gratefully

MCKEARNEY (FRENETTE), Mary Jane Born October 17, 1959 in Chicopee Falls, MA.
passed away peacefully on July 15, 2007 in Victoria, B.C. Predeceased by her
parents, Bob and Margaret McKearney. Lovingly remembered by her husband,
John Frenette; sister, Patricia (Francis) Lyons; nephew, Ian and niece,
Hannah; brother, Michael (Nancy) McKearney and a loving extended family in

MOYES, William Beveridge (Bill) With sad hearts we announce Dad's peaceful
passing at Victoria Hospice early July 12th, 2007 at the age of 81 years.
Dad was born February 23, 1926 in Cowdenbeath, Scotland. Dad followed his
fiancee to Canada in 1949. Dad married his bride Chris (predeceased 2001) in
Port Alberni and they moved to Victoria in 1951. They enjoyed almost 52
years of marriage and now Dad is dancing with his bride once again. Dad
joined the Oak Bay Police Dept on October 1, 1952 and moved through the
ranks to end his service of 33 years as Chief Constable on October 31st,
1985. He was a lifetime member of Henderson Lodge. Bill will be lovingly
remembered by his daughter, Loraine Cumming (Neil); grandchildren, Scott
(fiancee Sheryl), Lisa (fiancee King); daughter, Wendy Polsson (Ken);
grandchildren, Karl and Erica. Survived by sisters-in-law Annie Moyes,
Beatrice McNaughton, Lynda Milne, brothers-in-law David Milne (Carole),
Gerry Hickford and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his twin brother,
George, brother, Jim; and sisters, Margaret and Betty. Many thanks to
Victoria Hospice, Dr. A. Polson and especially the Bates Family. A
celebration of Bill's life will be held on Friday July 20th, 2007 at 2:00
p.m. at the Monterey Centre, 1442 Monterey Avenue, Oak Bay. In lieu of

OUDSHOORN, Tjaltje Born March 7, 1910, Harlingen, The Netherlands. Died July
15, 2007, Victoria, BC. Daughter of Captain Willem Politiek and Antje
Krakau. Wife of the late Jan Johannes. A brave loving woman of faith who
distinguished herself in life. A woman who met the challenge and filled the
gap. Tjaltje is survived by her 5 children Anneke Stroyan (late husband
Peter), Willem, Bram (wife Marieka), Agnes, Tjaltje Heino (husband Dick),
and her foster sons Darrell and Gary Utley. She was also blessed with nine
grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. A Memorial Service and reception
will be held at 10 am, Saturday July 21 at McCall Brothers, Johnson at

SHEA, Edna Eileen (nee Stocks) Wife of the late Garnet Shea passed away July
14, 2007 at the age of 93. Besides her lifetime of caring for her family,
Edna enjoyed her many church activities and some of her happiest times were
spent at the family cottage with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Edna is survived by her daughter, Ferne; 7 grandchildren, Garnet, John
(Julie), David (Laura), Debbie, Roy, Glenn (Cheryl) and Alan (Linda); 14
great-grandchildren; 4 great-greatgrandchildren; and 1 brother, Kenneth
(Fran). Edna was predeceased by her husband, Garnet and daughter, Cheryl;
her sister, Kay and 3 brothers, Bill, Joe and Bert. Sincere thanks to Drs.
Saunders and Cox, staff and nurses at Glenwarren Central Park Lodge for your

STOKES, Richard Gray On July 12, 2007, Rick lost a hard-fought battle with
an aggressive cancer at Lions Gate Hospital. His wife of 30 years, Arleen,
was at his side. Born in Victoria, BC in 1945, he died 22 days after doctors
gave him the news. Predeceased in 2006 by his mother, Jessie Stokes of
Victoria, Rick will be lovingly remembered by his father, Dick, brother Rob
(Joan), nephews Ian, Mike (Karen), great nephew Jesse; cousins Heather
Aston, Jane Fairbairn (Doug), Doug Fairbairn (Janis), Mac Fairbairn, Bill
Miller (Lynn), Clive Stokes, as well as father-in-law Andy MacLean,
brother-in-law, Don MacLean (Bev), nieces Michelle MacLean (Kevin), Chrissie
Brown (Ritchie) and great nephew, Logan Brown. A Vancouver teacher for 35
years, Rick established many friends locally and abroad. He was especially
fond of England where he taught for 2 years on exchange. Vacation memories
of Russia, Greece, Italy, France, Japan, Portugal and since retirement,
trips to eastern Canada and Hawaii were cherished. Arleen and family members
would like to thank the doctors, nurses and Social Worker G. Christie at the
Cancer Clinic as well as staff members at Lions Gate Hospital PCU who
attended Rick during his fight. Special thanks to Dr. Rainer Ludwig for his
support. A memorial service and reception will be held Friday, July 20,
2007, 2 pm at Boal Chapel, 1505 Lillooet Rd., North Vancouver

STRAITH, David Martin January 31, 1947 June 30, 2007 On June 30, 2007 David
passed away at the Kiwanis Pavilion. David was born in Seattle, Washington
but spent most of his life at in BC. David will be missed by many of his
caregivers and friends over the years (especially his good buddy Russ). He
lived in both Woodlands and Glendale institutions before moving into family
homes with Grace and then Patti for a number of years. From there he went on
to Braefoot House in 1998 and then with his good friend Robin in 2003. David
attended Satellite Day program. Few will forget the twinkle in his eyes or
his contagious laugh and sense of humour. He will be sadly missed and never
forgotten. A memorial service will be held Friday, July 20th, 2007 at
2:00p.m. at First Memorial Funeral Services, 4725 Falaise Drive. Reception

SUKKEL, Carol Elizabeth June 26, 1950 July 15, 2007 Survived by loving
husband Wouter, Parents Earl and Olive Rathwell, along with other relatives

TIPPETT, Richard Chilcott Passed away peacefully in the presence of his
family on July 9th, 2007 in Victoria, BC. Predeceased by his brother George.
Survived by his wife of 55 years, Elsie; daughter Debbie (Tom) and son Wayne
(Rolie) and sister Margaret Klein of Regina, Sask. Dick served in the Navy
during World War II, and was a member of the Masons and the Legion. He was a
gifted handyman, excelling in carpentry. He loved music and dancing. Dick
was a kind and compassionate man who always acknowledged the self-worth of
others. Dick and Elsie travelled much during his retirement, especially to
Hawaii and Mexico. He was loved by his family and friends, and will be
missed dearly. Flowers gratefully declined. If so desired, donations in
