CONNOR, Gladys Edith (Happy) October 28, 1912 July 16, 2007 Predeceased in
1974 by her husband George, by her infant daughter Karen and her son Phil,
by all her siblings and by many lifelong friends, Happy leaves to mourn her
loss, her sons Larry (and wife Charlotte), Gerry (and sons Gerrett and Nash
and their mother Joy), Erin (and wife Colleen and children Carling, Lili,
Brendan and Alan), and her daughter Merry (and daughters Chelsea and
Briana), as well as dear friends and extended family members in Canada,
Australia and Britain whom she delighted in visiting with throughout the
years. Born in Bangalore India, Happy came to Canada at the age of 13,
finishing high school at 16 and going on in the depths of the Depression to
become the first woman to earn an Honours BA in Economics from McMaster,
followed by teaching credentials and a PhysEd Specialist certificate from
OCE. After teaching for several years she married and raised her children in
Nova Scotia, Ontario and BC. Always seeking intellectual and physical
challenges she studied several languages, became an expert gardener, a
cryptic crossword and math puzzle whiz, and the reigning champion of the
Connor post-prandial charades league! She canvassed for many charities,
taught English to new Canadians, participated in two constitutional
conferences, became the founding president of the only French as a second
language Toastmasters Club in the world, and travelled widely, visiting over
60 countries from the time she was 60 until her last trip at the age of 89
to Burma. She was the family genealogist and photographer, carefully
recording family gatherings and delighting in the presence of her children
and grandchildren whom she loved dearly and of whose talents and
accomplishments she was so very proud. Curious, adventuresome, enthusiastic,
fiercely independent and courageous, full of verve and zest for life, Happy
was given what she called her `crazy' nickname in 1929 and spent her life
living up to it. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Hospice, the ALS
Society or the Connor Foundation. A memorial service will be held Friday,
July 20 at 3 pm at the University of Victoria Interfaith Chapel (Lot 6).

FOWLER, Isobel Sutherland (nee Walker) On July 13th our beloved mother,
Isobel, passed away peacefully at Cowichan Lodge in Duncan. Predeceased by
her husband Harry on ApriI 30th/07, she leaves her children Suzanne (Eric),
Judy (Bill), Dick (Inge), Holly (Daryl), Harry (Ramona), Martin (Lori);
grandchildren, great-grandchildren; and niece Karen. Mum was born Sept. 3rd,
1915 in Glasgow, Scotland, daughter to Meg and Daniel Walker and younger
sister to her beloved May. She enjoyed her childhood and school years,
excelling in the arts and showing a particular talent in drawing. She was a
precocious reader of poetry/literature and remained an avid reader all her
life. Isobel attended the Glasgow School of Art, received her degree, and
worked as a textile designer for a small firm. She also taught art in the
school system until the war began. Harry came into her life when she and her
sister May volunteered to host a holiday meal for two Canadian soldiers on
leave. It was love at first sight for Dad. Isobel came to Canada after the
war and she and Harry were married in Victoria in 1947. Mum loved babies and
children, raising six of them, fostering others and sponsoring children
overseas. Our home 'Blue Haze' by the sea in Metchosin was a place of warmth
and welcome over the years for friends and strangers alike. Hospitality was
second nature to Mum and "I'll put the kettle on" was one of her many
signature expressions. She was a wonderful baker and could whip up a batch
of scones for tea or create delicious and beautiful pastries for church
bakes sales and luncheons. She and Dad hosted numerous memorable New Years
Eve parties for the neighbourhood. Isobel's artistic soul found expression
in new and different ways after her children came along. She had always
loved music, dance and all things beautiful. She was an imaginative mother
and created special and magical times for us around holidays. She formed
beautiful spaces both within the home and in the garden. In later years
Isobel turned to the painting of fanciful animal and fairy scenes on small
boxes which were sold in a local gallery. This brought her great
satisfaction. Mum was the heart of our family. She was the strength we all,
including Dad, relied upon. She was passionate, intelligent, talented, an
inspiration in many ways; and as with Dad, her love of us remains the best
gift. As with Dad, we will miss her very much. We would like to thank the
staff of Cowichan Lodge for their loving care of our parents, and Audrey and
Jen for being with Mum at the end. As Isobel requested, there will be no
service. There will be a small private memorial and gathering for family and
friends at the home of daughter Judy Hodges. Condolences may be sent to the
family c/o Judy's address 1218 Burnside Rd., Victoria BC, V8Z IN8 Donations
gratefully accepted in Isobel's name to the children's charity of your
choice. 390697
