ARNAUD, Francis Irving On Friday, July 13th, Frank passed away peacefully in
the Sydney Care Home. Frank was in his 93rd year. He is survived by Ruth,
his devoted wife of 65 years, beloved daughter Frances (David) Ashdown of
North Vancouver, and loving granddaughters Ellen (Drew Jones) Ashdown of
Maple Ridge and Maryn (Robert Deas-Dawlish) Ashdown of Port Moody. Frank was
an early civilian member of the RAF Ferry Command, and he was commended by
the king for completing 20 delivery trips to England. After working as a
radio operator and navigator during the war, Frank returned to his position
as a radio operator for the Ministry of Transport. Frank retired to Central
Saanich at the age of 59 after 35 years of dedicated service. An ardent ham
radio operator, Frank was active in volunteer organizations and enjoyed
flying as a private pilot. He was an avid gardener, sailor and talented
craftsman. He and Ruth built a house in Central Saanich, where he passed on
his championship diving skills and love of astronomy to his granddaughters.
Throughout his life, Frank strove to follow his family mottos: "Aim Well ",
and "Be Faithful to Your Honour ", and his family meant everything to him.
No service by request. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your

BLOTT, Murray Passed away peacefully July 18, 2007 after a brief illness.
Born July 31, 1927 in Lloydminster, Saskatchewan. Murray is survived by his
loving wife of 58 years, Joyce; daughter, Susan (Bruce); son, Larry;
grandchildren, David, Brian and Kim; and sister-in-law, Eleanor. Murray
worked in the credit department of Woodward's for 38 years. An avid curler,
Murray was a member of the Victoria Curling Club. A Celebration of Murray's
Life to be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in
Murray's name would be appreciated to the Canadian Cancer Society.

BRINKWORTH, Marjorie Jean On July 16, 2007 at Victoria General my mother &
best friend, Marjorie Jean Brinkworth, passed away peacefully in her sleep.
Marjorie was predeceased in 2000 by my father, Henry. Survived by sons
Richard, Edward & Douglas. Thank you to all the medical staff who cared for
her. She will be missed dearly by all her family & friends. Donations to the

BROOK, Harold Roy Harold passed away in Victoria on July 17, 2007. He was
born in Edmonton, Alberta on February 1, 1955 and is lovingly remembered by
his parents Roy and Dora Brook and three sisters Jean Wheatley, Judy Tabert
and Joan Scullion. A memorial service will be held at the First Church of

BROWN, Genevieve Mary (nee Sulpher) January 3, 1925 June 21, 2007 With her
girls by her side, Genny slipped gently away on the morning of June 21,
2007. She was a beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and
friend. Born in Renfrew, Ontario, Genny is pre-deceased by her parents, Tom
and Theresa Sulpher, her sister Dale Ring, and her husband, Robert A. Brown
Jr. She will be greatly missed by her surviving family members daughters
Pamela (Brett), Lois and Carolyn (Christopher) as well as her six
grandchildren; Cory, Eden, Jara, Jaime-Brett, Giles and Gareth and her
brothers Tom (Dorothy) and David and sister Terry and their families. After
twenty-three years of married life, much of it spent traveling with her
husband Bob, Genny settled in the family home in Qualicum Beach, B.C. She
gathered about her a close circle of dear friends and was known as a
gracious and generous hostess. For many years, Genny was a strong supporter
of The Old School House Gallery and Art Centre in Qualicum Beach. As well as
hosting an art auction fundraising event for TOSH on her estate each summer,
she also contributed to various other local causes. The Brown family would
like to express their heartfelt appreciation to their mother's personal
caregivers as well as to her special angels" at We Care whose superb care
enabled Genny to remain at home. We thank Dr. Morag Atherstone for her
kindness and skill which made Genny's final days very comfortable. At
Genny's request, there will be no funeral service. A private gathering will

CARMICHAEL, Eva Marianna (Carson) July 16, 2007, passed away peacefully at
Victoria General Hospital after a brief illness. Predeceased by husband Ray,
brothers Mervyn, Bryan, Francis & Barry and sister Maurine. Lovingly
remembered by her last remaining sibling, sister Kathleen (Al) Vickers of
Saanichton, B.C. and sister-in-law Natalie Carson of Calgary. Eva was born
in Atwood, Ontario in 1911, the second child of Edmund and Rosetta Carson of
Unity, Saskatchewan. Eva completed her education in Unity and Saskatoon
during which time she developed a passion for sports, particularly baseball
and hockey. She retained this love of sports ( Go Riders Go! ) throughout
her entire life. Eva was employed with Pinder's Drugs for over 40 years,
many as lead cosmetician. Eva married Ray Carmichael in 1941 and they
retired to Victoria in 1975. After Ray's passing in 1981, she remained
active with travel and family activities as she enjoyed a very healthy life
through her mid 90's. Loved and fondly remembered by her nephew Keith
(Carol) Vickers and family, nieces Sharon (Dave) Bolster and family, and
Elaine (Bob) Greenway, all of Greater Victoria. Nephews Randy, John
(Debbie), Perry (Louise), Richard (Allison), Alan (Susan), nieces Judi
(Lorne), Pam (Dennis), Carolee (Dennis), Nora (David), Pat (Jeff), her
special great-niece Wendy in Nairobi and numerous long time friends in
Saskatoon and Victoria. Special thanks to the staff at Victoria General
Geriatric Ward 7C for their excellent care, understanding and compassion

CONNOR, Gladys Edith (Happy) October 28, 1912 July 16, 2007 Predeceased in
1974 by her husband George, by her infant daughter Karen and her son Phil,
by all her siblings and by many lifelong friends, Happy leaves to mourn her
loss, her sons Larry (and wife Charlotte), Gerry (and sons Gerrett and Nash
and their mother Joy), Erin (and wife Colleen and children Carling, Lili,
Brendan and Alan), and her daughter Merry (and daughters Chelsea and
Briana), as well as dear friends and extended family members in Canada,
Australia and Britain whom she delighted in visiting with throughout the
years. Born in Bangalore India, Happy came to Canada at the age of 13,
finishing high school at 16 and going on in the depths of the Depression to
become the first woman to earn an Honours BA in Economics from McMaster,
followed by teaching credentials and a PhysEd Specialist certificate from
OCE. After teaching for several years she married and raised her children in
Nova Scotia, Ontario and BC. Always seeking intellectual and physical
challenges she studied several languages, became an expert gardener, a
cryptic crossword and math puzzle whiz, and the reigning champion of the
Connor post-prandial charades league! She canvassed for many charities,
taught English to new Canadians, participated in two constitutional
conferences, became the founding president of the only French as a second
language Toastmasters Club in the world, and travelled widely, visiting over
60 countries from the time she was 60 until her last trip at the age of 89
to Burma. She was the family genealogist and photographer, carefully
recording family gatherings and delighting in the presence of her children
and grandchildren whom she loved dearly and of whose talents and
accomplishments she was so very proud. Curious, adventuresome, enthusiastic,
fiercely independent and courageous, full of verve and zest for life, Happy
was given what she called her `crazy' nickname in 1929 and spent her life
living up to it. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Hospice, the ALS
Society or the Connor Foundation. A memorial service will be held Friday,
July 20 at 3 pm at the University of Victoria Interfaith Chapel (Lot 6).

CRAIG, Donald William October 24, 1921 July 18, 2007 It is with great
sadness we announce the passing of Donald William Craig. Don peacefully
passed away with his family by his side at the Chemainus Health Care Centre.
He will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife Dorothy of 52
years; sons Steve, Mike (Kelly), Rob (Krista), Dan (Leslie), daughter Cathy
(Gerry Deeble); grandchildren Clayton (Kristin), Travis, Jackie, Kris,
Khara, Liam, and Natalie; sister Glad Craig; as well as many friends and

DRESEN, Joel Christian Hansen Recently deceased and so sorely missed, was
born on September 20th, 1955 at The Pas, and died June 25th, 2007 at Roi Et;
he blazed a trail in between. He is survived by mother Margaret Dresen,
father Niel Dresen, two brothers Ken and Ross, two sons Harlen and Erik and
wife Nim; also aunts, uncles, cousins and friends from Inuvik to Denmark, to
Sri Lanka to Thailand. He died and was cremated where he was at home,

ECKERT, Gladys Eleanor Peacefully on July 5, 2007 in Leduc Alberta, Gladys
passed away. Born April 12, 1944 in Leduc. Predeceased by her husband
Richard. She is survived by sister-in-law Hertha Falk, Mabel Eckert, Wanda
Eckert, Alma Culyer and Elsie James. Also many nieces & nephews and their
families. Gladys worked 30 years at BCTel/ Telus. She was very involved with
the Telephone Pioneers, Friends of the Park, Metropolitan Church. Gladys
liked to travel and see new places. Glady's garden was a favorite spot for
her to enjoy. She touched many people in her life. Gladys will be missed, as
she was very kind and special lady. A service was held on July 11, 2007 in

GUTHRIE, Samuel Gerald February 22, 1922 July 14, 2007 In loving memory of
our Dad, Grandpa, Great Grandpa and Uncle Sam, and loyal friend. Dad passed
away July 14th after a courageous fight with cancer and diabetes over the
past year. Predeceased by his beloved wife Kay (Kathleen May Guthrie) in
2000, his Mom, Elizabeth, and Dad, Samuel, and all of his 12 brothers and
sisters over the years, as well as his first grandson Carl Nyberg and his
son-in-law Art Wayman. Lovingly remembered by his daughters Trolene (Al)
Nyberg; Sharon Wayman; Arlene (Steve) Modderman; grandchildren: Carey (Dave)
Warwick & son Tory; Chris (Mahara) Wayman & daughters Sophia Rose, Kayla;

ModdermanAdair. Also to be missed by "young Rick", (Rick Frechette), a loyal
buddy who never missed an opportunity for a visit. Originally from Ontario,
Sam was a devoted husband and Dad, and has enjoyed a quiet family life since
retirement, although quite lonely since losing Kay 7 years ago. He served
his country for 6 years at a very young age, and from there took work
wherever he could find it, eventually becoming a very skilled and well known
local plasterer and stuccoer, and lived in Victoria for 41 years. The past 6
years he has resided in Langley and Chilliwack. A jack of all trades, he
loved working around the house and "fixing things up". He was very
thoughtful and was always there to lend a hand. He loved special occasions
celebrated with family. He was our very special "Santa" and we will miss him
very much! Our sincere thanks to Dr. Bester, the Chilliwack Hospital nursing
staff and the wonderful caregivers at Langley Gardens Retirement Home. A
memorial service will be held at First Memorial Funeral Chapel, 4725 Falaise

HIGDON, Cathy Passed away on July 18, 2007 surrounded by loved ones. Beloved
wife of Allen Gallant; dear mother of Krista Higdon. Cathy is also survived
by siblings, Jennifer Janes of Watford, England, Cynthia Janes, Sylvia
Collins, Terrance Janes, and Brenda Janes, all of Corner Brook,
Newfoundland. Predeceased by her parents Enid and Clement Janes and brother
Brian Janes. Cathy proudly served in the Canadian Armed Forces from 1981 to
2002. She was the warehouse manager for Canadian Tire View Royal in
Victoria, BC until the time of her passing. She will be sadly missed by all
who knew her. A celebration of life will be held at Sands Funeral Chapel,

HORNBROOK, Rielly Franklin Scott Nov. 12, 1991 July 17, 2007 Beloved son of
Corrine Thompson and stepfather Tim Costin. Grandson to Bill and Kal

JAUBERT, Yves-Paul Born in Paris, France on December 7, 1921, Yves-Paul
passed away on July 18, 2007 at the Saanich Peninsula Hospital. Predeceased
by daughter Michele (Ray) Johnson, and grandson Guillaume. Survived by his
loving wife Yvonne who he met and married upon moving to Canada in the early
1950's, their daughter Lyanne (Graham) Sanderson, and the children from his
first marriage, Chantal, Marie-Ange, and Francois. Also survived by
grandchildren Matthew, Jasmine, Danielle, and Joshua, and two
great-grandsons here in North America, and grandchildren Alice, Jacques, and
Cyril, and one great-grandson in France. Long retired from a career in the
private and public sectors, and a veteran of WWII, he moved to BC from
Ontario's Ottawa Valley in 1988. Until his health would no longer allow it,
he was very active in his faith, serving 3 missions with Yvonne by his side
in Washington DC, Mauritius, and Bretagne, France. His life-long passion for
photography has left a legacy of many treasured family images. He also
enjoyed the support and encouragement of several life-long friends. The
family wishes to express heartfelt appreciation to the many healthcare
professionals who cared for him during his illness, including Doctors Lewis,
Koziol, and VonWestarp, the caring and dedicated staff at Saanich Peninsula
Hospital, the BC Ambulance Service, and family pharmacist Jason Siu and
staff at Saanichton's Ideal Drug Mart. Your compassion surpassed our

JEW, Chun Oi July 1914 July 2007 Passed away peacefully on July 19, 2007.
She leaves behind her children Hong (May), Gloria (Robert) and Jennifer
(Whyte); grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many friends. Chun Oi was a
kind hearted soul who was always there for her family. She had a great zest
for travel, was giving, nuturing, compassionate and loved her plants. Her
infectious smile made her everyone's "Granny". Many grateful thanks to Dr.

KILBOURNE, Charles Hubert (Pep) Passed away at Campbell River & District
Hospital on Thursday, July 19th, 2007. Predeceased by his parents Ivy and

MAY, Dorothy Verne June 5, 1924 July 17, 2007 Mom passed away peacefully at
Resthaven Lodge in Sidney, B.C. Mom was born in Sutherland, Sask. As a child
she moved with her parents to Vancouver. She trained as a R.N. at St. Paul's
Hospital in Vancouver. Later while working at Lady Minto Hospital on Salt
Spring Island, she met and later married her husband, Ted. They moved to
Cowichan Bay, B.C. and then on to Sidney, B.C. via New Zealand. Mom worked
at the old Resthaven Hospital in Sidney and then at Saanich Peninsula
Hospital. Mom loved music and played the piano very well. She also loved a
good joke and we will remember her easy laughter and the care and love she
gave to those around her. Dorothy is predeceased by her husband, Ted. She
leaves behind her son Phil (Jody), her daughter Susan Anderson (Gord), and
her granddaughter Elizabeth Anderson. Special thanks to the staff and
friends at Resthaven Lodge for their care and compassion over the years.

NEX, Nesta Olwyn January 08, 1916 July 16, 2007 Mom was born in Abergavenny,
Wales, and died peacefully in the early morning of July 16, 2007. She goes
to join her dear Bert. As a child she immagrated to the US (Ellis Island)
settling in Spokane and later moving to Victoria. Her hobbies were
gardening, letter writing and baking anything chocolate. She leaves her
loving daughters Sue (Don) Bassett and Mary (Mike) Hannah and son Terry
(Helen) Nex, Predeceased by her son Des (Sheila) Nex, Survived by her
grandchildren: Danny (Sigrid), Susie, Carrie, Katie, Kenny, Karen, Rick, Don
and Mike, Justine, Kevin and greatgrandchildren Joshua, Racquel, Katie and

ROBERTSON, Myra Margaret Passed away peacefully at home on July 10, 2007.
Myra was born in Scotland on September 1, 1939 and moved to Victoria in
1964. She stayed at home to raise her two children and spent her time making
costumes for school plays, helping with home work and cheering her son on in
the rain at soccer games. Myra loved to entertain her family and friends and
had a passion for cooking. She loved to work in her garden and enjoyed walks
along the beach with her dogs, her favourite and most cherished memories
were the times were spent with her grandchildren. Myra will be truly missed
and fondly remembered by everyone who knew her including her son Euan
(Rebecca) and daughter Gillian (Doug) and especially her grandchildren
Alyssa, Tessa, Connor, and Madison. Grandma you will always be loved and
never forgotten. You were more than just our grandma you were our best
friend. The memories we shared with you will never be forgotten and you will

SMITH, Carol Christie 1941 2007 Carol Christie Smith beloved wife of Newell
Smith passed away at her husband's Victoria family home on July 15, 2007.
Carol's quiet, ever positive, appreciating and delighting manner had
influence on 27 years of Kindergarten Students including three years with
the La Conner, Washington School system (1968 1970), seven years in
Edmonton, Alberta (1971 1978) and the remainder of her teaching career with
the Delta School Board in Delta, B.C. (retiring in 1996). Carol was born
August 12, 1941 in Portland, Oregon, grew up in Seattle and graduated from
Mount Vernon High in 1959. She was a loving and devoted daughter to her late
parents, Walter and Gladys ([Leitch] b. Edmonton, Alberta, 1914) Christie of
Mount Vernon. She attended Skagit Valley College and the University of
Washington, and later Western Washington University, to obtain early
childhood education certification. Upon retiring she was able to devote time
and energies to the fine arts. She was a true post feminist movement artist.
Her works range from photography, Chinese brush painting (she studied under
Margret Chin for ten years) through to acrylics, collages and with the
influence of Kaz Tanahashi experimented extensively with powerful elementary
stroke paintings within the Zen idiom. Her photography took her to Polaroid

and as President of the Pender Islands Arts Society, and as President of the
Trincomali Community Arts Council and contributed to many other
organizations, including founding member of Hope Bay Rising and the Red Tree
Gallery. Throughout her life, Carol was an enthusiastic and knowledgeable
gardener and observer of nature. She enjoyed hiking and beach outings,
always deeply appreciating the beauty of the natural world. She had a wide
circle of friends and loved spending time with them. Carol is being strongly
missed by her husband of 37 years, Newell, her sister, Christie Nelson of
Stanwood Washington, and her son Douglas and his wife, Malu, of Richmond,
B.C., and the grandchildren twins John and Christina ("I want to be an
artist like grandma") and her cousins Kathy Shearer and Ken Moore of Mount
Vernon, Washington. Residing on Pender Island for the last ten years Carol's
many contributions and untiring generosity to the local community are going
to be severely missed. Her many friends in Canada and the United States will
greatly miss her. A memorial website is being prepared. Please join us at a

van de WETERING, Kommerinus (Rob) It is with great sadness that we announce
the sudden passing of Rob van de Wetering on July 13, 2007 at the age of 70.
Rob will be lovingly remembered by his devoted wife and best friend of 46
years Hilly, his sons Steye (Deanna) and Jasper (Joanne), and his
grandchildren Saskia, Logan and Tatum who will deeply miss their beloved
Opa. Rob is survived by his brothers Cees (Will), Nico (Margreet), Jan (Ans)
and Evert who reside in Holland. Often referred to as a great kind-hearted
man, Rob touched many people with his kind way and larger-than life
personality. He will be greatly missed by all who have known him. A memorial
service will be held to celebrate Rob's life on Thursday, July 26 at 2:00 pm

VAUGHAN, Heather Joyce Born June 24 1957 (Monticello, Indiana) Died July 12,
2007 Heather was a very special woman who remained kind, generous,
respectful, encouraging, gracious and loving in spite of suffering years of
distress and pain from lupus panniculitis. She will be greatly missed and
lovingly remembered by: her partner of 25 years, Mary Fox, who loved her
deeply, and cared for her faithfully over the many years of her long
illness; her parents Joyce and Bob Vaughan; her aunt Margery Vaughan; her
brothers Steve (Peggy) and Greg (Ingrid); her nieces Candace (Matt),
Bethany, Chelsea, and Kelsey; her nephew Brandon; the Fox family; and her
many loving friends. Heather graduated with a BSW from the University of
Victoria in 1983 and went on to work at Parkholm Lodge and the extended care
unit of Chilliwack Hospital. Heather's essential spirituality was enriched
by people, music, art, photography, gardening, and animals. She played a key
role in Mary Fox Pottery, as both business manager and artistic supporter.
Heather lived in Monon (Indiana); Nelson (BC), Lethbridge (AB), Washington
(DC), Edmonton (AB), and Victoria, Chilliwack, Vancouver before settling in
Ladysmith in 1991. A very special thank you to all who were part of
Heather's care team: Dr. E. Fritsch, her home care workers (homies) who gave
her understanding and compassion, the staff at Cowichan Lodge and the
emergency doctors, nurses and aides at Cowichan District Hospital. The
memorial gathering for Heather will be held at Ladysmith Eagles Hall, 921
1st Avenue, on Sunday, July 29 at 1 pm, followed by a reception at Mary and
Heather's home, 321 3rd Avenue, for family and friends. Donations in

WELLS, Beryl, (Betty) Born in Oxford, England in August of 1916, Betty
passed away peacefully on the morning of July 17, 2007. She was pre-deceased
by her first husband Ken Southern in 1944 and her second husband Cecil Wells
in 1993. Betty was a war bride spending the early years of her married life
in Port Arthur, Ontario. Following her marriage to Cecil in 1947, she spent
several years in Chile before she and Cecil moved to southern Alberta in
1954. They left many friends behind when they retired to Victoria in 1982 to
be closer to family. Betty is survived by twins Susan (Hillicke) and James,
(Muriel), Southern, sons Andy, (Shelly) & Mark, (Denise) Wells, daughter
Heather, (Sid), (Weiss), 8 grand children and 3 great grand children. Many
grateful thanks to the staff of Resthaven Lodge for their thoughtful and
loving care over the past years. A memorial service will be held at St.
Andrews Anglican Church in Sidney on Friday, July 27 at 1:00 P.M. in the
afternoon with a reception to follow. Flowers are gratefully declined. In

WILSON, Chloe Anne Passed away peacefully on July 17, 2007 at Saanich
Peninsula Hospital. Chloe was a kind hearted soul who was always there for
her family and friends. In recent years she volunteered her time at Beacon
Community Services (Brentwood Bay). Chloe was predeceased by her parents Les
and Anne, brother Jim, son Bob Jr. (2002), and most recently, husband Bob
(April 2007). She is survived by sons Tom (Debbie), Garry (Savanee),
daughters Shirley, Sally and grandchildren Melanie (Dave), Rachelle,
Tiffany, Brandon and Kimberley, her sister Judith and brother Jack. Chloe
also leaves behind many friends on the Island as well as Arizona, where she
and Bob spent their winters. The family acknowledges with thanks, Dr. Chris
Bosman, Dr. Margaret Smith, and doctors, nurses and staff at the B.C. Cancer
Clinic, RP1 Jubilee, the SPH Palliative Care Unit, and close friends and her
sister who helped with her care. At Chloe's request, there will be no
