BARKER, Antoinette Rosemarie (Anna) 01-01-1952 to 22-07-2006 God gave us you
for just a time, He never really said how long, I guess we thought it would
be forever, To always have your caring ways, and tender smile. But when God
called you back home, Our hearts and soul went into shock, One that we can't
seem to recover, But God has a Master Plan, And we will all be together in
his happy Land. In life you were loved dearly, And though you've gone, we
still love you. They say God called you home, You left us with lessons to be
learned, That you were a golden example Of what life is all about here on
earth, To live to love to forgive to be generous And have faith, love and
hope, For through God all things are possible. By your loving husband,
Richard, and family relations and friends. 384510

DINTER, Bernhard Fredrick A. September 24, 1924 July 19, 2007 Bernhard was
born in Ziegenhals, Germany. As a schoolboy he was athletic and competed in
skiing and track and field on the provincial and national level. Drafted
into the German Army in 1942, he saw action with the 14th Panzer Division at
the Russian Front, notably in the Battle of Kursk. He was decorated with the
Iron Cross before he was 20, and attained the rank of Lieutenant. In the
winter of 1945 he was a ski instructor at the US 8th Army Ski School in
Gersfeld. Later he would refer to this stroke of luck as proof that
sometimes the idle pursuits of youth are not completely in vain. Bernhard
took the counsel of his grandmother who urged him to do something really
peaceful after the arduous war experiences and become a gardener, a decision
he did not regret. Working as an apprentice at one of Germany's leading tree
nurseries, he met his future wife Gertrud. They were married in 1950, and
immigrated two years later with their 8 month old son Bernie to Canada's
gardening paradise Vancouver Island. Their daughter Ingrid was born in 1953.
For the next 20 years Bernhard worked as a gardener at Shawnigan Lake
School, a time of good quality of life, personal growth, and many
friendships. In the 1970s, Bernhard resolved to test his entrepreneurial
abilities, where he started the B. Dinter Nursery Garden Center. With the
energetic support of his wife, and the capable help of his son Bernie this
venture turned into a remarkable success. Bernhard went out with his
landscaping crews, until he, in his seventies, was beginning to feel his
age. He continued working at the Garden Center, with a staff of highly
capable longstanding employees, all of whom referred to him as the much
beloved Mr. D." This was still a good creative time, as evidenced by nearly
a thousand garden designs commissioned by clients during the last 15 years,
and there were also countless consultations given daily over the phone or in
his office. These activities were in keeping with his lifelong principle,
that every man should strive to leave this world a better place, and with
his proclaimed mission, to make the Cowichan Valley more beautiful. Looking
back at his life, he would use the horticultural analogy that he had been
derooted by Stalin from his homeland Silesia in 1945, only to strike roots
in Canada and thrive there. Bernhard is survived by his wife of 57 years
Gertrud, son Bernie (Cyndy), granddaughter Tamara, daughter Ingrid of New
York, sister Rosi Rohloff of Sunnyvale, California, many friends and family
around the world. Thank you to the Cowichan District Hospital nursing staff
on 2 South for their compassionate care. A memorial service will be held at
2 p.m. Saturday, July 28 at Shawnigan Lake School Chapel. If you wish, a
donation may be made in Bernhard's name to St. Ann's Garden Building
Project, Providence Farm, 1843 Tzouhalem Road, Duncan, BC V9L 5L6 where the
work they do can continue to bloom and grow. 391825
