Linda, there is a Burgess Clark listed near my Thomas C Clark, same census page of the 1840 Dale Co, AL census. His name is misspelled I believe as it is Burjuss (barely readable) on that page. Since I have found him, I have wonder if he and Thomas are brothers. He is about 8 or 10 years younger than Thomas and I believe would put him in your age range for your Burgess. I have a copy of this census page if you would like a copy I can scan and email it to you. Also there is a Burgess in the 1800 York Co, South Carolina area.
Hope this has helped. I am still trying to get beyond my Thomas to who his parents are. ;-) Perhaps we can get lucky and find that my Thomas and your Burgess are related.
