Dear John,
I am very interested in working with you on this line. My
ancestors
also went to AL (they first went to TN About 1800 for a few years
because their oldest 3 children were born there and I do not know where
they were in TN), but mostly Sumter, Greene, Hale, & Marengo Co. I have
been trying to prove my John Greene Coate line from "Little John". Info
I got this summer from the county historian (a Coats Couson) in York,
Sumter Co. AL makes several references to family members stating they
are descendents of "Little John" and also reference to Litigations into
the 1930's over the way the streets of Newberry was originally laid out
and family contact with "cousins" in SC during that time. The only way
I can figure out now how I am descended from "Little John" is for my
John Greene to be the son of "Little John"s son Henry. The parentage of
"Little John" has also been in question. So, your statement about
"Little John" being Jehue's Uncle really perked my interest and I wanted
to know what you have on this.
Also, this same info says that family tradition in both the
Flowers and
Harper families is that their ancestor, "Little John" was related to the
founders of J & P Coats, Ltd. And it says this is further confirmed by
Fanny Goodman, "Recollections of Fanny Goodman" who was a descendent of
"Little John" Coats. Also is stated that Coates settled aroung
Saulberry, NC in the early 1700's. Members of the family moved to SC in
the middle 18th century settled where C. John Coate or William Coate or
perhaps John William Coate moved from Saulerry NC 1762 and was the
father of John Coates(coommonly called "Little John").
Since I received all this info, I haven't had time to sort
everything
out and I'm trying to get a copy of the "Recollections of Fanny Goodman"
to see what all she says. Hope to make some progress, we've grown to 3
AL researchers now. Kay Parker McCary, Milam, Sabine County Texas
PS Have any of you who have been to Newberry seen anything about this
litigation on the layout of the town of Newberry? Kay
