Hi list:
This message contains no genealogical data. However, for all you SC
Quaker-hunters, I hunted down the site of the Bush River MM this past
weekend. There is an historical marker at the site with pertinent
information about the meeting, when it ended and why, etc. We cautiously
walked a short distance through the weeds and vines into the forest and found
a small graveyard. True to form, there were very few tombstones--Herberts
and Hunts and I think one Chandler. No mounds nor rocks to mark a burial
place but then, after nearly 200 years, one couldn't really expect to find
any if they were ever there. Obviously, the Herberts are frequently spelled
Harbert in the records.
Newberry, the nearest town, is lovely and reflects more of the German
heritage of the Dutch Fork. There are still a few Quaker names in the phone
book--Pugh being one of them and some of the streetnames reflect Quaker
connections. Somewhere in the area there was a Mendenhall street or road. I
can only describe this as a "connecting" experience to walk on Quaker paths.
But then, I'm sort of weird that way.
