To those who asked, yes, there were two. According to all my research, and the research
of cousin Ray LeFever, Jr., there
were two Mary Ann Coulters. They were sisters, children of
Walter Coulter and Margaret E. Storie, being #2 and #13 in the familys birth order.
Mary Ann (1) was born 25 Mar 1827 in Bovina, Delaware Cty,
NY, and died 25 Jan 1847. She was married to Thomas
Strangeway, Jr. She was only 19 years, 10 months old
(CETA Cemetary Survey, not always accurate.) She is buried
in the Old UP church cemetary on Reinertson Road in Bovina.
This is confirmed by the E. Davidson publication of Burial
Sites in the Town of Bovina, Delaware County, NY. which is a compliation of Fletcher
Hoys notes and available on the
Delaware County site. At this time, I dont have anything
else in my notes about Thomas Strangeway, Jr. According to
my reseach, they didnt have any cnildren. I have a suspicion
that she may have died from childbirth complications.
Mary Ann (2) was born 10 Sep 1848, in Bovina, and died 16 Mar 1877. She appears in the
1860 Census of the Town of Bovina
with Walter Coulters family. She married Caleb B. Monroe,
28 May 1873. According to my records, she had two daughters,
Jenny and Mary Ann (Anna) who grew up , married, and had
families of their own. Caleb Monroe married second, a
Violetta C.(?)
It was not uncommon for families to repeat, in the same gener-ation, the names of children
who had died young. This is the
only instance I have found where the first-named child was
grown up and married before she died and still the parents
chose to repeat the name.
Cousin Rays research notes, in his 1998 work The Descendants
of Francis Coulter, read as follows. (I have permission from
Ray to quote his work.) In the first quote, he is referring to
the notes of Fletcher Hoy.
Found a Mary Ann Coulter married to a Thomas Strangeway, Jr.
She was born 1827 and died 25 Jan 1847, age 19y 10d (sic),
buried. This from Fletchers notes. Also found an 1967 letter from Wm. Storie, Glens
Falls, NY. He says Mary Ann. sister of Francis Coulter (who married L. Henderson) married
Th.
Strangeway. Since the Mary Ann, who married Caleb Monroe, was
born after the death of this one, she could have been a sister, named for her deceased sister.
In the second quote, Ray is referring to his own research.
in the notes of the Surrogate Court, Delaware County, File
box 12: Petition of Margaret E. Coulter, widow of Walter Coulter.....Heirs.....Maryann
MOnroe.....dated 20 Dec 1876.
Filed for final settlement 29 April 1878. Since then,
daughter Mary Ann has died, leaving husband Caleb B. Monroe
and children Jennie and Mary A...
So, there we have it, two Mary Ann Coulters from the same
family, born twenty-one years apart.
