James and Larry,

My gg grandmother was Mary Ann (Polly) Coulter, b abt 1839 in Tennessee. I
know nothing about her parents, except that her mother's name was (probably)
Jane and she was full blood Cherokee. I do not know her maiden name but she
(Jane ?) married a Coulter and I do not know if he was Cherokee or not. Family
stories say Jane moved to Oklahoma (probably in the Trail of Tears). I do not
know what happened to her husband (Mr. Coulter).

Mary Ann (Polly) Coulter married William Granville Shaver (later became
Shafer) on 10 Jun 1852 in Morgan Co., AL. By the 1860 census, they were in Burnet
Co., TX and in 1870 in Travis Co., TX. Granville died in 1873 or 1874 in
Williamson Co., TX. By 1883, Mary Ann (Polly) Coulter remarried to Hope Hull
Posey in Lampasas Co., TX. They left Texas shortly after this and went to visit
Mary Ann's mother, Jane, on the reservation in OK. Mary Ann died in about 1888
on the reservation in OK, and Hope Posey and Mary Ann's 4 sons returned to TX
as they could not communicate with the grandmother, Jane, for she only spoke
Cherokee. The boys never returned to OK to register with the Dawe's Rolls. I
have yet to find the burial place of Mary Ann or her mother, Jane.

The only 1850 census record I have found in TN with a Mary Coulter that is
about the right age for my Mary Ann Coulter is shown below, but the wife's name
is Mary, but there is the possibility it could have been Mary Jane, so don't
know if this my family or not. Please let me know if you have any information
that might fit into my family.

NOTE: I am not sure this is the family of our Mary Ann Coulter, but the age
and birthplace was right, so have included it until further research can be
done. It appears that 2 Coulter families may be in this household, as there are
2 James' and 2 Andrew's, and a range of 25 years in age.
