Most of you probably know this already but for the benefit of new
researchers, I post this message.
Here are some other variable names, misspellings, etc that may appear in
documents and information
pertaining to the COULTER name.
Calter, Calder, Caulter, Caulder, Colter, Colder, Coalter, Coltar, Coltur,
Coltee, Colteu, Coalter,
Couter, Coutter, Cottler, Colther, Cother, Cothers, Cothral, Cothron,
Cothran, Cothren, Cothrin,
Coutler, Coatler, Coulten, Clother, Culter,
Of course there are family names by these names too which are not COULTERS.
But search it out. It may be yours.
Also if the l is crossed with the t, It may appear as COTTER.
Also look at the K,s for possible misspellings.
I found my John and Edward Coulter listed on FL Militia lists as Cotheran,
Cothran, Cothren, Cothrin, Cothron.
They served in the Seminole wars.
I found my John who was in Fayette Co TN 1830 listed as Coatler.
J W Coulter, my husband's grandfather was listed in a genealogy of his
wife's maiden name as Coulten.
John's brother Edward listed in a marriage book as Castleter.
If you are pretty sure your family was in that area of the censuses at that
time, while you are looking,
look at these possibilities.
Some would say " That's not our name, we do not spell it that way." But
remember you were not doing the spelling but your ancestor or his neighbor,
or an unknowing, sometimes weary or uncaring census taker was doing it at
that time. Best of luck . Mary
