It does look like military service is a strong possibility given his age,=
=20
as immigration was not usually permitted for young men unless their servi=
ce
obligation was completed or they had otherwise been excused from service.

Here is something you might try, as it is both relatively accessible and=20
affordable (LDS microfilm), is alphabetically arranged, and apparently
covers a pretty large number of Bohemians who served in the Austro-
Hungarian armies.

Description: Grundbuchbl=E4tter Diverse 1780-1930. =20
Military foundation registers for the Austrian army for personne=
l from=20
Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia. Records are divided into two seri=
es.=20
Both series are strictly alphabetical by surname and given name.
Beginning surname on each film is shown. This same surname is=20
usually found also at the end of the previous film as well.=20

Here are the LDS film numbers for the films from each series in the
alphabetical range for Chaloupek, I've marked with an asterisk the
ones that would cover that name & spelling. You may also want to=20
consider other possible spelling variations. Don't forget that "James"=20
will not be the Czech version of his first name, you will want to conside=
r=20
the Czech equivalent(s).

Cerv - 1762172 *
Chalupsky - 1762173=20

Cerny - 1881236 *
Chalupnik - 1881237=20

No guarantee this will turn up what you want, but it may be worth a try
at the cost of a couple hours reading films and an outlay under $10.

thank you for the information on the LDS film I go there often so will order
as soon
as they are open after holidays his name in CZ would be Jacob Chaloupek it is
spelled that way there-- Chaloupek means little house in Bohemian, what ever
that
means. I had some search done several years ago in the Trebon area archives
and
they found nothing so probably was in wrong Archives. If and when I can come
up
with where he might have come from would help when it comes to finding
records.
I also know that the LDS library is probably the best for they have almost
anything
and is not costly. I didn't think about military records so you have opened
up a door
for me I thank you.
