To Pat Sproat, and all who have been asking questions about the SSDI
For a definitive answer on the Social Security Death Index, please refer to
Rootsweb Guide Lesson No. 10 on the Web, and I quote:
"As marvelous a finding aid as it is, the SSDI does not include the names of
everyone, even if they had a Social Security number. If relatives or the
funeral home did not report the death to the Social Security Administration,
or if the individual died before 1962 (when the records were computerized)
then they will not appear in this database. The omission of an individual in
this index does not indicate the person is still living. It simply means
that there was no report of the person's death to Social Security
Administration"
Listing of a person's name on the SSDI has nothing to do with anyone else
receiving benefits from the Social Security Administration. It is as stated
above - the official word from the SS Administration itself.
The SSDI is updated monthly - therefore it is always the latest information
possible.
