Hello Beatrice

You need to look at the Baptism registers for Diptford around
1808-1815ish. It will show his mother's name and if you are very
lucky it may even say "the supposed son of ...." or "illegaly begotten
by ......"

Obviously you can't do this yourself from Darwin, but maybe the
Diptford registers are on-line in the LDS Family search programme?

There may be bastardy records for Diptford in the Devon Record Office.
