Dear Listers,
I hope someone can help me out of the maze that I am in. I keep running
into walls.
I am trying to research my dad's family, the surname is Clapp. Any
documentation that I find only says that he was born in England. Vague to
say the least.
Joseph Clapp was born in March, 1841. His father was William Clapp, mother
unknown.
Joseph married a Catherine Gibbon from south Wales and three of his children
were born in Wales. There might have been other children as the 1900
Pennsylvania census says that Catherine had 12 children. We think she meant
12 pregnancies as we can only find the names of six children. Three were
born in Pennsylvania.
Children: Mary Anne Clapp b. 1863
Martha Clapp b. 1864
William Clapp b. 1868
There are some discrepancies on when Joseph emigrated. On the census
reports he says 1863 but as this country was in the middle of the Civil War,
I don't feel comfortable with this date. He first appears on the 1870
census. His wife Catherine claims to have come over in 1867. Nothing
explains why if this is so, they had a son born in Wale in 1868.
In researching the Pennsylvania street directories, I found three other
Clapps within a block of where Joseph and his family lived. There is a
possibility that these gentlemen were siblings, cousins or related in some
way to Joseph.
Names: Henry Clapp
James Clapp
Clay Clapp
If there are any census records out there, I would appreciate SKS checking
to see if Joseph Clapp or any of the other Clapps are listed.
Thanks in advance for your help.
