Hi:
From past experience I know that it is worth my stepping in quickly
when anyone posts a query concerning general computer matters.
I know it is a temptation to do so if DEVON-L is one's main genealogy
mailing list, but there are much more appropriate mailing lists for
just about any off-topic subject, where the chances of getting
extensive useful feedback are much higher. For a useful list of
mailing lists in general see:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~jfuller/gen_mail.html
and, in particular, for computing-related mailing lists, see:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~jfuller/gen_mail_computing.html
Finally, can I ask anyone who cannot resist knowingly posting an
off-topic message to make it clear that any responses should be sent
by direct email, and not via the mailing list - one way of
encouraging such behaviour on the part of responders is to offer to
provide to DEVON-L a subsequent summary of any responses received
(preferably complete with a statement discouraging any responses via
DEVON-L!).
Cheers
