I am trying to find my HEAD roots. My Head family is said to have gone
to Newfoundland from the Dorset or Devon area.
The earliest Head I have found mentioned in Newfoundland records was : A
John Head is mentioned in Benjamin Lester's Diary on the French
occupation of Trinity Harbour, before the invasion: Thursday July 1
1762: " Wind at S.W.fine gale but no news of the French--- Everyone in
confusion, noe boats at sea, Eight of my servants ran away with JOHN
HEAD"S boat---" From the book- The Story of Trinity by Gordon Handcock,
Page 19.
We have traced our Head family back to Joe Batts Arm, Newfoundland where
John and Mary Head had 4 children baptized in August 1821 in the
Anglican religion.
In 1836 there are Head Families in both Roman Catholic and Protestant
religions listed.
I have a couple of questions for Head researchers reading this…
Are or were there Head families in the Devon area??
What religion did the Devon area Head families belong to??
Thanks in advance.
