Re the trial of William Lang.
I have a photocopy of a pamphlet of 1641 entitled: "Fovrtie Articles In The
High Covrt of Parliament, againft William Lang who was Vicar in the Parifh
of Bradworthy in the County of Devon; but now prifoner in the City of
London...." [Usual 'long s' being used].
He really was a naughty boy, being apparently a hedger, ditcher, thresher &
general ag lab in the parish; fled to Ireland after warrants were issued
about a little spot of forgery, & returned 4 years later, pretending he had
obtained Holy Orders. He took over Bradworthy Vicarage & spent the next 18
years giving his parishioners a hard time, mostly by vexacious litigation,
forgery & insult. Sample: when asked to christen a baby he replied: "What
wilt thou have me to chriften thy old Sow?" He also left bodies unburied,
"to the great annoyance & grief of his Parifhioners".
Ahh...., they don't make vicars like wot they used to.
Maybe someone can tell us what happened to him. The pamphlet calls for his
execution.
Did he leave any posterity? Anyone out there hanging their head when the
LANG family is mentioned? :-))

Stephen
