Hooray! It seems like years since anyone wrote to Devon-L with
a WINDGEATT query!

I think this is your Charlotte:

Scroll to the right to see her on the family tree.

These WINGYATTs were Confectioners in Exeter in the late
eighteenth and early nineteenth century - then the family mostly
seemed to move on to Plymouth and did fairly well for
themselves. I found and attempted a transcription of the four
wills available from the PRO - see the web pages above.

Unfortunately I don't know much more about them - I think you
are the first descendant to get in contact. There are
fragmentary records of WINDGEATs in Exeter for centuries so this
family could have lived there for a long long time. On the
other hand there were several Mathew WINDGEATs in the
Horrabridge area in the seventeenth century so they could have
moved to Exeter from there in the eighteenth.

There is also another WINDGEATT-KINGWELL connection in that a
John WINDEATT worked as a servant for some KINGWELLs in South
Brent for decades - commemorated on his tombstone. But this is
almost certainly a red herring.

We also have an elusive connection with BULLEY in Teignmouth -
but there are lots and lots of BULLEYs in Devon so that would
certainly be even more of a red herring!

I don't know anything I am afraid about the KINGWELLs but I will
keep an eye open from now on.

Keep in touch.

Oh and P.S. Windeatt, Wingate and Winget are the same name -
strange as it may seem.
